How a Hard Working Mom Made Her Big Dreams Come True

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Let me tell you a story. This is a story about what it took for this determined,
enthusiastic and talented lady to lift herself up by her boot straps so she could
achieve her most cherished and fun-filled dreams.

The creative force behind the site called: Mom O’All Trades on Crafty Ones, is Tami
Polichetti. Tami has behind her the support of her husband as well as a house full of
four beautiful children; a college degree in accounting; and a growing accounting
practice as a CPA.

Several years ago, Tami started Crafty Ones. Her dream then was to reach out, via
the marvel of the intenet, to reach people all over the world and let them know
about the many beautiful, unique, one-of-a-kind handmade craft items available
from Tami’s very creative friends and associates who are a part of Crafty Ones.

Of course, Tami knows she has to take good care of her family. In addition, her
many accounting clients have learned to rely on her for her sound advice regarding
taxes and other financial matters. But, I remember one time when she confided in
me that after a long day at a desk, using her brain and constantly working with
numbers and complex tax problems she found she needed to take a break.

So, to escape and get away from the numbers, the computer, and the tax problems,
here is what she does. She gets up, walks out her back door, across the yard and
steps into her barn behind the house. There, her well equipped wood shop awaits.
Soon, with all thoughts of family, accounting and computers behind her, she finds
herself lost in the most relaxing, attention holding work of using her hands to cut
and shape the wood into simple little artistically painted objects of art.

As you can see on her website, Tami has the talent and imagination to make many
different kinds of colorful garden ornaments. There are: markers, puzzles,
decorations and plaques. Each brightly painted wooden design is a product of her
imagination and holds within it her heartfelt desire to make a really unique one-of-
a-kind creation just for you. She hopes each new owner of one or more of her
simple little wooden treasures will learn to love and enjoy their simple beauty for
many years to come.

Finally, Tami wants you to know, as you hold one of her little wooden creations in
your hand, it is proof that dreams do come true.

Improving your Family’s Health for Life

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Weight problems do not always run in families, but it is quite likely that the eating and exercise habits we learn as children stay with us into adulthood. That is why it is never too early to help your family develop the habits that can help them eat right and control their weight for life. Implement these daily living rituals and improve your entire family’s health:

Food is not a reward:
One of the earliest associations we have with food is comfort: a crying infant get’s a bottle and feels happy for a while. Food should be comforting when it satisfies hunger, but it should not merely be used as a substitute to satisfy other needs. A cranky toddler may calm down when you hand her a cookie, but a hug or a story might have worked just as well. Then there is the cranky adult who calms down when you give them chocolate. Is it not amazing what chocolate can do? But consider the message you are sending your kid when we are cranky: we eat. Help them learn to eat when they are hungry, not when they are not.

A time and a place to eat:
We can also learn to associate eating with other activities such as watching Television or going to the cinema. After a while, we find that turning on the TV turns on our desire to eat even when we are not really that hungry. Remember Pavlovs’ Dog? It is really the same concept; conditioning breeds behavior. The good news is that unhealthy behavior can be changed through conditioning as well. You can help your family break the habit of automatic eating by making two simple rules: only eat meals while seated at the dining table and eat healthy and balanced snacks rather than junk food.

Shopping for health:
Another tip is to be a wise shopper. When shopping, avoid processed, refined, or packaged foods. Besides costing more than fresh foods, processed ones are likely to have various preservatives, added salts and/or sugars, and far more calories. Steer clear of soda, chips, and candy! Buy fruits, nuts, flavored water, raisins, and other healthy snacks. Remember, if you do not buy junk, your family will not eat it because it simply will not be in the house.

Family exercise:
Although healthy eating is going to do wonders for your family, it is only half of the solution. The other half is exersice. You can burn off excess calories before they turn to fat if you implement exercise. Organize family exercise outings like after-dinner walks, week-end hikes, playing ball, miniature golf, and other fun family activities. Along with healthy eating habits, twenty to thirty minutes of vigorous activity 3 times per week can help you and your family stay fit and trim as well as bring you closer.

Coaching: How to Have a Mentor for Your Life

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

My business card says I’m a marriage and family therapist. That doesn’t very adequately describe what I do.

For example, spend more than 30 seconds with a new person and the inevitable “what do you do for a living?” question arises. I usually get one of three reactions:

1) “Oh, that’s nice”, and then they walk away. (I’m really not that scary.)

2) “So are you analyzing me right now?” (As if that’s all I do in my spare time.)

3) “Oh, let me tell you about my husband/wife/kids/etc.” (Makes me want to tell people I’m a plumber!).

Many folks just don’t really know what goes on in counseling. What notions they do have come from TV and movies with some boring at best and weird at worst shrink talking strange sounding psycho-babble.

Good therapy is really not at all like Woody Allen whining and complaining while laying on a couch week after week forever. In fact, the only person who ever lies on my couch is me, if I’m really tired between sessions.

In my humble opinion, the two best portrayals of therapists/counseling are Judd Hirsch in the 1980 Robert Redford movie “Ordinary People”, and Robin Williams in the recent award winning “Good Will Hunting” (minus the choking scene, of course!).

What these two movies have in common is they show the counselor doing what I believe good therapy is really all about: coaching!

That’s right, coaching.

All I really do is to meet a person where they are, ask them where they want to be, and design tools and solutions to get them there. Most of the time, when things go really well, we end up moving even further than they thought they could.

That’s just one of the many valuable things that good counseling/coaching has to offer. Here’s a few more that clients have shared with me:

•Someone’s undivided attention for at least an hour. That’s a very rare thing in our fast paced instant culture.

•New perspectives other than your own.

•Tools and solutions designed for your particular struggle or challenge.

•A “coach” whose job it is to help you do well in life. Even Michael Jordan had a coach.

•Someone to actually listen to you. In his book “The Lost Art of Listening”, Michael Nichols says “Few motives in human experience are as powerful as the yearning to be understood. Being listened to means that we are taken seriously, that our ideas and feelings are known and, ultimately, that what we have to say matters.”

•Someone to help you get “unstuck.” So many times, we get stuck in doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. A good counselor/coach can show you many other options for getting what you want in life. Remember, “if you keep doing what you have always done, you’ll keep on getting what you have always gotten.”

•Someone to “check-in with” as you face the various challenges of life. After we have solved the current crisis that brought then in, many of the folks that I counsel/coach don’t do the traditional “same time next week” for the rest of their lives bit. We begin to taper off to every other week, every third week, and so on. Some people have monthly check-in appointments, others check-in 3-4 times a year.

•As Scott Peck says in the opening sentence of The Road Less Traveled: “Life is hard.” There is nothing wrong with asking for some coaching along the way. Even if you have been “doing it wrong”, there’s really nothing wrong with being wrong. The only wrong thing is to keep on being wrong once you have realized you are wrong. Right?

So if even Michael Jordan, one of the greatest athletes we will ever see, needed a coach, why not you as well. Who’s your coach? Will this be the year you give your self the present of a little “life coaching?”

Online Currency Trading Strategy – The Insider Secret

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

If you have an online currency trading strategy, then you should incorporate the advice given in this article to make bigger profits – and maybe even change a losing system into a winning one.

The advice we’re giving here is contrary to almost everyone else on this subject – keep in mind however that 90% of traders lose! So, let’s stay away from the losers and make some profits.

Get Set for Bigger Profits

So, what’s this insider secret anyway? – It’s about looking at money management in a different light.

Money Management and your Odds of Success

Most traders are virtually guaranteed to lose – because they have money management strategies that ensure they are constantly going to get stopped out by normal market volatility.

For example, many traders risk say 2% of their equity on a trade. On small accounts, this amounts to just a few hundred dollars. They enter the trade, and market volatility ensures their stop is hit. The market then goes back in the direction they had anticipated – and piles up thousands of dollars! Our trader though, thinks he was just unlucky – and tries again, but he wasn’t unlucky, and volatility will take him out every time.

Money Management Guaranteed to Lose

A string of small losses soon adds up, and the trader runs out of money – and his online currency strategy is at an end.

The trader may have been right, on where markets were going – but got stopped out of the trade – and ended up losing instead of winning.

Does this sound familiar? – It happens all the time.

How to Protect Equity and make Bigger Profits

Here are seven tips to incorporate into your currency trading strategy, to protect equity and build huge profits.

1. Don’t listen to advisors or brokers. Advisors don’t care if you win or lose – and brokers certainly don’t mind, as they work on the assumption you will lose anyway. The more commission a broker makes the better – and tight stops ensure this.

2. You need to risk more per trade – so you need to be very selective in trades. Forget day trading, and concentrate on the big, longer-term trends.

3. Keep in mind this truism – “with risk goes reward”. Without risk, there cannot be big rewards. Currency trading offers big rewards – but you have to be prepared to take the risk.

4. Taking a risk with no thought, and taking a calculated risk, is entirely different. If you are taking a bigger risk, you are not necessarily going to lose – it depends on the logic behind the trade – and the profit potential. That’s why you should trade sparingly – and concentrate on the big trends.

5. Use up to 10%, or maybe even more, on the trades you are confident in – these are the big moves – and you don’t want to be stopped out!

6. Don’t move stops up too quickly to protect equity – big currency trends last months or years – so give the trade room to move. You don’t want to get into a big trade, and get stopped out on the first correction – if you think the trade is going to be big, then have the courage of your conviction.

7. Use options as a vehicle – they’re great if used correctly – to give you staying power. Use at the money, or in the money options – with plenty of time value, for greater staying power. Options are a great tool, but NEVER buy out of the money options – or options that are close to expiry.

An online currency strategy consists of a number of components – and the one that lets down the bulk of traders, is money management. They try so hard to avoid risk, but end up creating it – and lose. Don’t make this mistake in your currency trading strategy – you need to take risks, pure and simple – and as the famous, US general George Patton said:

“Take calculated risks – that is quite different from being rash”

The fact is, most traders don’t believe this – they end up creating risk by trying to avoid it – and that’s why their currency trading strategies fail every time – don’t make the same mistake!
