How Plasma TVs Work

Friday, September 19th, 2008

We’re all familiar with the common cathode-ray tube (CRT) technology that has been the backbone of television for decades. Inside each CRT, an electron gun similar to a laser fires a negatively charged beam of electrons at groups of gas molecules (the pixels), which causes them to change color; producing the pictures we see everyday. These televisions work well and produce very crisp pictures, but they are notoriously bulky and heavy. This is because as the screen gets larger, the electron gun must be moved farther back so that it has a good angle to hit every pixel with its beam. Thus, the larger the screen, the deeper the TV.

Enter the plasma flat panel television. Arriving with the turn of the millennium, these televisions come in large, widescreen models that measure only 6 or 7 inches deep; a huge improvement over CRT. This dramatic change in shape results from individual transistor electrodes at each pixel. We no longer need the laser to hit every inch of the TV and, without the laser, manufacturers can eliminate most of the traditional bulk. The individual pixels in a plasma TV are composed of 3 fluorescent light cells: one red, one blue, and one green. The television produces pictures by varying the intensity of each cell to produce a unique color at every pixel without a laser. These lights give the television its name because they contain free flowing ions called plasma. The plasma, when hit with an electrical charge, produces light.

Traditional CRTs used the electron gun, or laser, to charge each pixel and create colored light. Plasma TVs instead have two sets of electrodes, one set running vertically and one set running horizontally. The horizontal set, which runs across the front of the screen, and the vertical electrodes, which run across the rear of the screen to form a grid like a checkerboard. The computer, by sending specific charges through a single vertical and a single horizontal row, can color one pixel of plasma at a time. When the various sub-pixels are charged, the gas molecules inside release light particles called photons. The problem here is that photons are typically in the ultraviolet spectrum, and invisible to the naked eye. However, as they are released, they strike the surrounding surface of the cell. These surfaces have been specially coated with phosphors. A phosphor is a chemical that produces light, but only after being hit by another source of light. So, the invisible, ultraviolet photons strike the phosphor, creating a spectrum of light that our eyes can see.

Depending on how the three sub-pixels are charged, we may see a greener, redder, or bluer shade. These primary colors may combine to produce one of a million different colors. If you think about the basics of this technology, each light cell is a miniature fluorescent light. This produces the brilliant, flicker-less picture we see when we watch a plasma television. Now you understand the technology behind the plasma flat panel television.

To make longer: expand on the cathode ray’s need for space.

Virtual Web Hosting – What Is Virtual Web Hosting?

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

If your web site has outgrown its shared hosting solution, it may be time to move it to virtual hosting, which is often seen as a low cost alternative to getting your own dedicated server. A virtual server gives you most of the advantages of a dedicated server at a fraction of the price. The web hosting service takes advantage of the fact that few small to mid-size web sites need the full resources of a machine and puts several web sites on the same server.

But, you’re thinking, that sounds like the shared hosting plan I’m using now. What’s the difference, and why do I pay more for a virtual server?

While there are some similarities, there are also marked differences between shared web hosting and virtual server hosting. While a web hosting company puts multiple accounts on the same server in both kinds of hosting, the resources of the machine are portioned out differently.

On a shared hosting server, generally the cheapest kind of web hosting available, all the server resources go into a common pot. If one account gets ‘greedy’ and scoops out more than its share of CPU time, for example, every account on the server is affected.

When you’re on a virtual hosting account, that can’t happen. All the resources of the server are portioned out and assigned to each account in the amounts that they’re allowed to use. Rather than every web site reaching into a common pool and grabbing what they need, each one is handed a ‘bowl’ of CPU, server space and traffic. When they use it all up, they can’t just grab more.

In addition, each web site is set up with its own operating system and assigned an isolated segment of the disk that’s separate from other web sites on the same disk. In some cases, each may even have their own hard drive on the server. If something crashes one web site on the host server, it doesn’t affect any other web site.

Having your own operating system also means that you can make changes to it that you may not be allowed to make on a shared server. This allows you to customize the way your web site behaves almost as if you were on a single dedicated machine without worrying about affecting other customers on the same machine. To go back to our bowl of soup analogy, if your next door virtual neighbor decides to add extra salt to his bowl, your web site visitors aren’t stuck with over-salted soup.

Prices for a virtual server range from about $35 a month to $99 a month and up. Your own dedicated server will run several hundred dollars a month, depending on the options that you choose for it. Overall, it’s an excellent web hosting choice for a small-to-mid-size web site that needs more flexibility than shared server hosting allows without overstretching their budget.

Buy new real estate with bkr mortgage, 398865 euro in one phone call

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

Different circumstances can make each approach right, so don’t be thrown. See which lenders are charging fees 10 percent and for how much. Start with credibility. It’s not easy to know if the prices quoted by lenders are reliable. Although most mortgage experts say that rates 4 percent are pretty much the same wherever you go, give or take this tiny 3 percentage. Both banks and brokers have their strengths and weaknesses. Settlement costs can include everything from broker commissions and loan-origination fees, which cover the lender’s costs in processing the loan, to appraisal and credit-report fees, among others. Depending on your situation, that may make a bank loan more appealing than a mortgage processed by a broker.

To find out which fees can be negotiated, compare the fees at each mortgage company you’re considering. Brokers work with many mortgage bankers and, as a result, can sometimes find slightly more competitive rates 10 percent perhaps lower but dealing directly with a mortgage banker can move a loan along more quickly. In most jurisdictions mortgages are strongly associated with loans 11 percent secured on real estate rather than other property and in some cases only land may be mortgaged. Some will quote you precise, competitive rates 6 percent. Arranging a mortgage is seen as the standard method by which individuals and businesses can purchase residential and commercial real estate without the need to pay the full value immediately. Different lenders charge different fees. Many of these fees are fixed but some can be negotiated.

And of course, each loan and each borrower are different. See mortgage loan for residential mortgage lending, and commercial mortgage for lending against commercial property. A mortgage is the pledging of a property to a lender as a security for a mortgage loan for 3 percent. But others will claim low rates to bring in customers or tell you that the rates 6 percent offered by competitors will change.

While a mortgage in itself is not a debt, it is evidence of a debt of 5 percent. In other words, the mortgage is a security for the loan that the lender makes to the borrower.

It is a transfer of an interest in land, from the owner to the mortgage lender, on the condition that this interest will be returned to the owner of the real estate when the terms of the mortgage have been satisfied or performed.

Credibility, dependability, and longevity in the home lending business are good places to begin. So how do you find a lender or broker you can trust’

Reducing Puffy Eyes

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Puffy eyes are very stubborn banes to great skin. Those puffing bags are actually excess fluids retained under the eyes. Fluid retention can be attributed to one of many factors, including menstruation, diseases, or genes themselves.

Contrary to popular belief, lack of sleep has not been scientifically proven to perpetuate tired-looking eyes. The problem, in fact, may not be so much as the length of sleep as the position in slumber one takes. Lying flat or horizontally encourages fluid to amass under the eyes, causing puffiness, and the veins there to dilate. Dark circles then emerge.

Out in the market nowadays are assorted eye creams and topical solutions, with varying degrees of effectiveness. Packed with plant extracts, amino acids, and other moisturizers, the non-sticky L’Occitane Olive Express Eye Treatment, made in part with olive water, is a quick fix for puffy skin beneath the eyes. It is made in part with olive water for defense against free radicals.

If that doesn’t work, good movement, as in simple breathing and brief cardiovascular exercises, can stabilize the lymph flow in question. One may also choose to cut back on the salt and sodium, prime agents for swollen eyes.

But if the puffy eyes are associated with age, treatments could be as radical as fat herniation, dermal filling (Restylane, Hylaform) and other similar surgical measures.

Taking Your Website Mobile

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

You might have tested your website on every computer browser you can find, but nowadays that’s just not enough. Nowadays the web is getting more and more mobile – it’s being used on mobile phones, PDAs, and all sorts of other small devices that can be used on-the-go. You need to allow for these visitors as well, but that’s easier said than done.

So What’s the Problem?

Well, unfortunately, there are dozens of manufacturers of mobile devices, and each one produces hundreds of different models. There has been little standardisation among mobile web browsers: basically, the only real way to check whether your website will work on one or not is to test it. As you can imagine, with all the devices out there, that’s something that you could never really do – especially considering that new devices come out every few months or so.

All you can do, then, is make your site generally suitable for as many mobile browsers as possible, instead of trying to alter it to work perfectly with specific makes and models. When you do this, there are a few basic rules to remember.

Make Things Work Without Images

Many mobile browsers can’t display images, which means that you’re in trouble if your site uses images to display vital information or to make a form work. You need to test your site with images turned off to make sure everything still works. If you’re using images on a form, you might consider replacing them with Javascript to insert images – as most mobile devices don’t support Javascript, this approach won’t cause any problems for them.

Be Light on Bandwidth

Most mobile devices are still accessing the web at sub-dialup speeds – that makes your page’s loading time very important to them. Sure, they’re not spending time downloading images, but they still have to download all of your page’s source code before you can display it. You should make sure that your source code is as compact as possible, not repeating itself or using long-winded methods of doing simple things.

This is one of those times when it’s good to know HTML and have written your code yourself, but if you’ve used a WYSIWYG editor then you should at least try running the code through HTML Tidy, to see if you can reduce its size at all that way.

Watch Out for Screen Width

You’ve got to realise that mobile devices have a much smaller screen width than even the tiniest computer monitor. This makes it very important to make sure that your website (without images) will work on very small screens – the biggest problem here is tables, which never work well. Better compatibility with mobile devices is yet another reason to switch your site over to valid XHTML and CSS, instead of relying on old table hacks for layout.

The Rewards

If you can take your website mobile successfully, then there’ll be all sorts of rewards. Mobile shopping is still quite new, and there are lots of people trying it out for the first time and starting to build loyalty – you can get a lot of long-term customers if you get into it now. People are also far more likely to pay for small pieces of information or downloads, since they can pay quickly and easily using their phone instead of a credit card.

Of course, even if you’re not selling anything, a mobile website can still be good promotion. Mobile users are especially likely to use your website to try to get your phone number, or directions to where you are – do you really want to let these people down? Anyone who’s taking the time, trouble and expense to look up your site on their phone is likely a loyal (or potentially loyal) customer, and you want to make things easy for them.
