So That’s What Goes On A Home Page!

Friday, October 17th, 2008

In the early days of the World Wide Web, the word went around that the thing to do on a home page is to heartily and sincerely welcome the visitor. Today, this is unnecessary, cliched and ineffective. Instead, an effective home page needs to quickly orient the visitor to what the business or professional practice offers, distinguish these offerings from competitors’ and direct the web site visitor what to do if they are interested in learning more.

It’s especially important to make a strong and clear presentation on the home page if you want perfect strangers coming from a search engine to spend more than 10 seconds on the site when determining whether or not it is relevant to them. Getting business from such strangers is one of the major payoffs of having a web site, and they lack the patience of someone who has already had contact with you or been referred by a trusted source. Even people seriously inclined to hire you don’t have endless patience to wade through hot air, jargon or superfluous preliminaries.

Therefore, a home page must make it possible to answer these questions within 10 seconds:

* What is being described or sold here? What kind of business is this? * Why should I do business with this company rather than its competitors? * What should I do to find out more or get in touch?

In judging web sites for the Webby Awards, I have seen as many rich, large companies as small ones overlook the first essential for a home page – set the context. Orient the visitor. The perfect stranger may need to know things that you assume everyone already knows, such as:

1. What business are you in? Include a commonly understood industry name or the generic name of your primary product or service prominently in the home page copy, if it’s not already part of your business name or in the tag line. When this information isn’t plainly and obviously stated, many visitors are screaming to themselves, “What IS this?” as they hit the back button on their browsers.

2. Who do you serve? So many businesses – banks, restaurants, dentists – leave it unspoken what state or province and even what country they are in when that’s essential to someone figuring out whether or not this business meets their needs. When location plays a crucial role in service, make it unmistakable where the business is. Other times, the answer to this question is more subtle. You need to indicate that you work with Fortune 500 companies, or mostly with authors, or with ambitious fitness professionals and health club owners.

3. Why should someone do business with you? The best kind of answer to this question involves presenting the benefits someone gets from buying your products or services. Indeed, I recommend putting such benefits right in your home page headline. For instance, for a caregiving support site I created this headline: With Support, Caregiving Becomes a Rewarding Journey. For a site about a book on outstanding women scientists and artists, the headline read: Learn From Accomplished Women Role Models How to Create a Fulfilling Lifelong Career. Note the inviting tone of these headlines. Within the paragraphs of the home page copy, refer again and again to what customers get and what makes you different from competitors.

4. What should I do next? Even though you provide navigation links for people to choose where to go next at the site, it’s effective to say explicitly what someone with such and such an interest should do. Your call to action might have more than one part, such as: To learn more about how Hyana Heights Club helps you stay healthy and fit, click here. To book your free tour and complimentary aerobics class, click here.

Use these guidelines to create or redo a home page, and you’ll enjoy a significantly improved response from your web site both from people landing on your site from search engines and those already somewhat interested in what you offer. There’s much more involved in turning web site visitors into customers, but you’ll certainly thereby have laid the groundwork for a reasonable return on your web site investment.

Loss of Hair for Lads Can Be Stressful

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Baldness in guys affects approximately 9 million in the British Isles, the most common type of hair loss is genetic male pattern baldness. The hair loss will often develop as young as 22 and develop emotional stress.

Hair loss is usually hereditary and will probably target males as well as ladies. The hair loss seems due to the hair follicles on the head shrinking and the hair dropping out and not returning. Baldness ordinarily follows a balding pattern around the hair line and don’t forget at the middle of your head. Read about hairloss from Carl Howell Advanced Hair Studio now.

Hair loss is not an awful disease and does not directly affect your actual health, although your emotional health could become affected through depression.

There are 3 awesome main treatment methods for baldness, Minoxidil, Finasteride and Strand by Strand from Advanced Hair Studio, aka AHS. The first big hair loss treatment is a topical lotion that goes on the scalp and can be purchased from hair loss clinics. The hair loss treatment Minoxidil works by slowing the rate of baldness, simply brilliant. Finasteride works by stopping the conversion of the loss of hair hormone. The spectacular Strand by Strand hair restoration method from Advanced Hair Studio, also known as AHS, uses the very latest hair restoration technology and involves new hair strands growing on the scalp strand by strand over a short time. With both the Minoxidil and Finasteride treatments they need to be consistently applied and taken for the hair growth effects to keep working.

Buying a Satellite Navigation (Satnav) system for your car

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Buying a Satellite Navigation (Satnav) system for your car.

Once they were only for the rich and were only fitted in very high end cars but today SatNav systems are available to all. You can either opt for the relatively expensive in-car fitted systems or you can go for the handheld or portable units. This article is about the latter.

What is SatNav?

SatNav is a navigational system that comprises of two elements, a GPS data receiver and a CPU/display unit. The receiver receives its information from orbiting GPS navigational satellites and communicates this information to the CPU/display unit. From the signal the unit is able to compute its exact location on the planet. The data receiver usually receives data from 7 or 8 different satellites and it is by comparing the data received from the different satellites that the CPU can compute the position.

The unit displays road maps of the area along with an indicator showing the current position and heading of the car.

Features
The units allow you to plan a journey ahead of time. The unit will guide you to your chosen destination by displaying a map of your current area, the road that you should follow is usually shown in a different colour. Most now have voice instructions so the unit will tell you, when you are approaching a junction, which turning you should take. The units are also capable of making real time adjustments to the route, this means that if you go the wrong way the until will recalculate the route to your destination taking into account the wrong turning you have just made. The display can also show other information like speed of the car, distance to next turning, time to destination, average speed etc.

Maps
The maps for the unit can be loaded for the different regions you visit, so there may be a map of the UK and another for France and so on. Most modern units store the maps on a removable memory cards like SD cards or similar memory card but some units read directly from a CD or DVD. The display can be set to show the conventional flat map view or the new 3D view that shows a view as if the camera for the display was above you and looking forward. This view is very good and clear.

Traffic
Some units offer systems that will warn you of road works/traffic jams etc as they happen, and offer suggestion as to how to avoid them.

POI
Most units have Points of Interest (POIs) incorporated into them that will show things like garages, restaurants, historic sites, airport and ferries etc. You can also add your own POIs of your favourite places. One POI that is very popular is the location of all the speed cameras and accident black spot locations.

Weather
Another feature that is becoming increasingly available is the weather for a location. The system will tell you the weather at a certain location on the map i.e. at that beach location you are planning to visit.

Usage
When you want to plan a journey you will need to enter the start and end destination, this can be done in a number of ways, the city, street and house number. The street intersections, the post codes or a location chosen on the on screen map. The start can be done in the same way with the addition of the present location as the starting point (remember the unit knows where you are). There are then itinerary or way points, these allow you to program destinations along the way. Finally you are usually presented with choices of routes with choices like, Fastest Route, Shortest Route, Scenic Route, Avoid Motorways etc some have the choice to avoid toll charges.

Fitting
The units can be fitted into the car in a number of ways but the 2 most popular ways are with a mounting bracket that has a strong suction cup. This cup sticks to the windscreen. The second way is a bracket that fixed to the cars air vents, this method can be very good but requires a fixing for each type of car. The unit is then fitted to the brackets and adjusted to give the driver the best viewing angle.

There are dozens of systems available now with a variety of choices of the options available. You need to choose which of the above options are important to you and then choose the unit that best suits you or your budget.

You can see a large variety of different units at different costs at my favourite comparison site www.wangled.co.uk just type in Mobile GPS

Avoid the Mobile Phone Matrix Scam

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

The mobile phone matrix scam has fast become one of
the largest growing scams on the internet at the
moment and is abundant on many of the internet auction
sites, these mobile phone scams offer mobiles for as
little as £20. This sounds very enticing and people
readily sign up, however the majority of the members
never actually see the promised goods.

How do they work?

The definition given by trading standards (of a matrix
scheme) in their report into current scams sums it up
very nicely :

Consumers who buy the product become members of a
waiting list to receive their chosen ‘free gift’. The
matrix works by sending the person at the top of the
list their ‘free gift’ only after a prescribed number
of new recruits has signed up – the prescribed number
varies according to the choice of ‘free gift’ but can
be as great as 100. Once the ‘free gift’ has been
sent, the remaining members each move up one place on
the waiting list.

The person who has moved to the top then has to wait
until the prescribed number of new recruits has signed
up again in order to receive their ‘free gift’.
Although it is not compulsory for members to sign up
new recruits, they are encouraged to do so in order to
move themselves up the waiting list faster. This has
led to some members placing misleading adverts on
internet auction sites offering the ‘opportunity to
buy a mobile phone for £20 , in order to seek new
recruits.

So basically the early members are paid out only when
sufficient new members have joined under them, the
maths behind this are absolutely staggering. I have
used a simple example of a scheme that operates on a
ten tier matrix with an entry price of £20 and a
gadget price of £150.

Member #1 pays: they are, “the member to get the
mobile phone ”

Member #2 pays: Scammers Fund is £40.

Member #3 pays: Scammers Fund is £60.

Member #4 pays: Scammers Fund is £80.

Member #5 pays: Scammers Fund is £100.

Member #6 pays: Scammers Fund is £120.

Member #7 pays: Scammers Fund is £140.

Member #8 pays: Scammers Fund is £160.

Member #9 pays: Scammers Fund is £180.

Member #10 pays: Scammers Fund is £200.

Once the member count reaches 10 member #1 ‘cycles’
and receives their gift, so the mobile phone matrix
website makes £50 (£200 scammers fund – £150 cost of
gadget). Member #2 then moves into prime position and
the process starts over again. When member #2
‘cycles’, the website will make another £50 and
another 10 members will have had to have joined.

Using that example, the figures seem quite good,
however the majority of these mobile phone scam sites
offer mobiles worth £300-£600 and as such they need to
increase the tiers (or the entry price) so as to cover
thier costs and make money. If they operated a 100
tier scheme then the 100th member would need another
1000 to have joined before they see their gadget! Some
sites have been found to be operating 1000 or 10000
tier systems!

Here today, gone tomorrow!

The mobile phone matrix scheme, like all pyramid
selling schemes, eventually gets to a point where it
is unable to attract sufficient numbers of new
members. It then collapses and those still waiting for
their gadget are left holding the can as they cannot
move forward without new members. What tends to happen
now is that the people held in the tiers of the matrix
try to promote the scheme further through the use of
websites, forums and the auction sites and this
further compounds the problem and just lines the
scammers pockets further.

Remember, these mobile phone matrix sites only make
their main money in the beginning as people join, once
this starts to dry up the scammers move onto other
things leaving the lists to collapse. Also it is key
to remember that most of these scammers never actually
send the goods even if you get to ‘cycle’ and the
majority of names and claims made by the sites are all
fake.

Final thoughts

Please remember that these mobile phone matrix schemes
are ILLEGAL, if you see one on a site or an auction
site then please report it to trading standards (for
singular websites) and also report it to the auction
sites (most have rules regarding these sites).

The simple way not to get taken for a ride is not to
get involved in the mobile phone matrix’s in the first
place.

I will sum it up in one statement when dealing with
mobile phone matrix schemes :

” If the deal sounds to good to be true, THEN IT IS”

“5 Ways to Give Your Web Site a Big-Company Look and Feel”

Monday, October 13th, 2008

We all DO judge a book by its cover, and the same saying goes for Web sites. I’ve seen many entrepreneurs offer great information on their Web pages, but compromise their image dramatically with a few amateur mistakes that can be VERY unforgiving.

If you want to attract high quality clients and customers, and convey that you’re a legitimate, credible, and sought-after business, these five points are a great launching pad to give your site that “big company” look and feel.

<< 1. Start with a high-quality LOGO. >>

The one your kid created for you doesn’t count! I’m talking about paying a designer to do one for you, and it doesn’t have to cost in the thousands. If you don’t have much of a budget, consider the following options:

For my E-zine Queen site, I used an online logo service called “1800MyLogo” (http://www.1800mylogo.com). At the time they charged only $199 to design a professional logo based on my business, style, and personal preferences. The whole process only took about two weeks and was conducted entirely over the Web. (To see the final result, take a quick peek at http://www.ezine-queen.com)

I’ve also heard good things about http://www.gotlogos.com, where you can get a quick Web site logo for only $25!

<< 2. Get your own business DOMAIN NAME. >>

It’s just a fact that folks will feel safer shopping at a site with its own domain name.

For example, if you were shopping online for a circular saw, would you be more likely to purchase from a hardware site called “www.bobshardware.com” or the one whose URL is “www.geocities.com/3339/bobshardware?” (This is a fictional example, by the way.)

Having your own domain name implies you’re a “real” company, and not Uncle Bob working in his kitchen at night (even though you my very well be ; )).

There are several “bargain basement” places to buy domain names, but the two most popular and credible are still: http://www.register.com http://www.networksolutions.com

<< 3. Get (and USE) a business E-MAIL ADDRESS. >>

Nothing screams “amateur” like sending out professional e-mail from a handle like “fuzzybear4u@hotmail.com.” Once you get a domain name for your Web site, have your hosting company set up a professional e-mail *alias* for you.

Let’s go back to Bob, for example. Suppose Bob’s e-mail has always been “BobSmith0002@earthlink.net.” Now that he has his own domain name, he can instead use “bob@bobshardware.com”. He still KEEPS his Earthlink address, because that’s where he’ll actually receive his mail. But he should only GIVE OUT the new one on his Web site, business cards, etc.

If you use Outlook Express or a similar e-mail program, you can set it up so that your e-mails ONLY show your e-mail alias and NOT your personal e-mail address. (To do this in Outlook Express, go under the “Tools” menu. Then choose “Accounts.” Then select the account you use, and click “Properties.” Enter your e-mail alias in both the “e-mail address” and “reply address” fields.)

<< 4. Get a professional-looking Web site DESIGN. >>

This can mean either hiring a designer to do a custom site for you, OR designing it yourself. Unless you’re both trained extensively in HTML and have a background in design, it’s well worth the money to hire someone.

Find prospective designers who work with small businesses, ask to see samples of their work, and be upfront about your budget. If their rates are higher than you can afford, ask them if they have any pre-designed Web site templates they can just insert your information in, cutting down tremendously on design time and cost.

If you do want to put together your own site, check out the “corporate” section of http://www.freewebtemplates.com for several neat designs you can use at no charge. (TIP: Avoid the ones with colored backgrounds; they’ll make it more complicated for you, and your text will be harder to read.)

Whatever design you choose, make it CONSISTENT on every page of your site, by using the same design elements such as borders, fonts, and colors.

<< 5. Tell us WHO YOU ARE and HOW TO REACH YOU. >>

Most of us (and rightfully so) are leery of purchasing

online from a company we’ve never heard of before. To alleviate our fears, put contact information on every page if you can, with a physical mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address.

If you’re uncomfortable posting your home address, lease a box at a mailing and shipping center and use that address. Avoid using “P.O. box” in your address if possible, which can appear suspicious. Real companies have real addresses!

Also, get a *toll-free* number if you can it really says “big company.” I got mine from my long distance provider, 1Com (http://www.1cominc.com), because they charge no setup fee or monthly fees I only pay for the incoming calls at my usual great long distance rates.

Google Sitemaps

Monday, October 13th, 2008

src="/logo_wht_30.gif" alt="google sitemaps doc" width="110"
height="48" border="0"> By the time the Web is growing,
search engines take more time crawling websites and algorithms
must be improved to spider efficiently.

Sitemaps are ususally coded in pure HTML (CSS…), webmasters
commonly use a page to describe the structure of their website
and they insert this mapping onto their main page or on a
different page, so search engines like Google find each link
with more ease.

This article overviews the Google sitemaps xml program which is
in a BETA state. The use of this XML file is to help search
engines crawl the web more efficiently.

For instance this file includes a hierarchy within the links.

As scanning of webpages becomes more sophisticated for search
engines; for instance spiders are trying to discourage keywords
stuffing and other attempts to boost back links and page rank,
new programs must be created to extract relevant websites from
the mess.

Yet in a BETA state, Google launched its program for this
purpose.

Will other webcrawlers implement this program soon ?, I guess
MSN, Altavista… are already thinking about it, a hierarchy
within the links is not a bad idea and the use of this file
should decrease the time consumed from spidering all these
useless links.

The sitemaps file

There are several formats you can use to build your sitemaps
file, you can use RSS, txt… However Google recommends the use
of its own protocol (I’m curious about what other search engines
will do about this !).

I guess we better follow Google and start building our maps
right away.

Here is the example from LinksTraffic:

And the full linkstraffic sitemaps xml file: Sitemaps.xml

For important sites, it’s advised to use a Sitemaps generator,
Google provides one for free and there are some other free tools
also.

Once you uploaded your file into your server, you can submit
your sitemaps to Google (you need a Google account to achieve
this procedure, by the way you will be able to keep in touch
with the latest changes from their side).

There are some statistics about Google crawling of your
sitemaps, however keep in mind that it may take a while before
the first crawl.

Thanks for reading, i hope this article has been useful for some
of you, in a next article i will talk about the robots.txt file.

Web Hosting Explained for New Adsense Entrepreneurs

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

First of all Let me tell you , It’s not that hard and it’s not that expensive. The biggest misconceptions when it comes to starting a series of websites to capitalize on the Adsense advertising empire is the price for hosting and confusion surrounding it.

If you’ve registered the domain example.com you can create free sub domains which would look like site1.example.com and site2.example.com. but call them anything you like. You could really get started fast if you chose this method.

If you do not have web design skills but you still want be involved in the Adsense fury, don’t worry on eBay you will find people selling pre made Content WebPages. Discover How to Purchase Designer Clothing That Provides Back Your Money’s Worth

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Obtaining and carrying off trendy designer clothes is not the easiest thing to do. Then again, thanks to super ready made designer clothes and increased disposable wages, the majority of us fashion lovers could afford to acquire a gorgeous piece of great value designer clothing every now and then. Nevertheless, there are certain issues associated with designer dresses that are likewise not there with your conventional branded clothing, with the very most key ones being the design and the price of such blouses.

Designer shirts costs decidedly more than even the very best brands for sale in the market; and the reason why designer clothes cost so much is because they not only offer fashionistas first class quality and brilliant styles, but because they are exclusive. Even budget ranges in high fashion shorts carry only limited editions, so there are extraordinarily low chances that you will note your neighbor wearing the same good value dress that fashionistas recently bought.

To select the best kind of designer clothing for yourself, pay attention to a number of things. If fashionable people are not a regular designer buyer, then chances are that low cost is a selling point with you. In such a case, it is even more foremost that you select terrific high fashion skirts that might often in fact give you back your money’s worth.

To do this, the 1st thing to do is to get beautiful trendy designer clothes that compliments your body shape and body size. If fashionistas do not do this, then even the greatest designs might often end up making glamourous shoppers look a horrible mess. Do follow the basic rules of not getting loose garments that will make you look wide or small and not getting vertical patterns and deeply dark colours if you are extremely slim etcetera to buy shirts that complement your body shape, colouring and facial features.

The other principal thing to consider is if you want your outstanding designer tops to last you are to get pieces or designs that are classic and timeless in nature like a navy skirt suit. Check out the latest Marc Jacobs at Matches Fashion.

Keep It Simple, Stupid: The Beauty of a Clean Cut Website

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Don’t knock it; “Keep It Simple, Stupid” is a great rule to live by. Nobody likes a website to “yell” at them, with blaring colors and flashing lights. Too many buttons will turn customers off. I had this problem with my homepage at http://www.antion.com. A colleague of mine, who makes a lot of money, pointed out the cluttered look of my site. I had worked so closely on every detail of the page; that I couldn’t see it for what it was anymore.

I set out to simplify my site, first by removing the banners and combining my navigational buttons. The goal was a clean looking homepage, so possible customers would not get frustrated or confused and click away.

I also eliminated many of the choices on my site, narrowing it down to two groups for my main clientele, “Need a Speaker” or “Be a Speaker.” The concept here is to make it simple for my customers to locate what it is they are looking for. Reducing the choices on my site will save customers from having to wade through all of my stuff. This would do nothing more than waste their time and reflect poorly on me and my ability to help them.
