Why Brides Don’t Know What Wedding Favors to Buy

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Many brides are flummoxed when it’s time to choose the wedding favors. They aren’t sure when to order them, and they aren’t sure what to get. If you’re one of those brides, this article can help you figure it out.

When to Order Them

Brides like to put off ordering their favors until shortly before the wedding. This isn’t because they’re lazy; it’s because they have a more accurate guest list then, and they’re less likely to end up with the wrong number of favors.

Sometimes this is a good idea, and sometimes it isn’t. For brides that plan to buy something fairly generic, such as a truffle or specialty chocolate in a decorative box, putting off the favors is fine. That way, if your first choice ends up back-ordered, you won’t feel much grief in ordering an alternative — after all, chocolate is chocolate.

On the other hand, if you’re having an unusual theme wedding and only one kind of favor will do, or you simply have your heart set on something, you’re better off ordering sooner. Favors are subject to churn — styles come and go. More than a few brides have bookmarked “favorite favors” on my site for months, then written in anguish when the items went out of stock or hit a six-week backorder shortly before the time they planned to order.

In short, if you can substitute easily, then wait until your final guest count comes in. If not, play it safe.

What to Get

Many brides ask themselves, “What will everyone like?” Trying to please everyone didn’t work when you decided who to marry. And it won’t work when choosing your favors, either.

Sometimes brides get so intimidated with the question that they start asking other brides what to get. This never works either — and here’s why.

Brides come in distinct flavors, like ice creams. Some are vanilla. Some are more exotic, like avocado-coconut. The Hallmark Wedding Press Room has a little gem that puts it perfectly: younger brides often want a traditional, fairytale affair where everything goes by the book. But many older brides having a second wedding are determined to do things their way … which can be pretty non-traditional. Are these two brides going to be happy with the same kinds of favors? Of course not!

Let’s say you’re the kind of bride who has a little drawer or shelf full of silver picture frames and miniature wedding cake candles. Almost every wedding you’ve attended has given you a little keepsake reminder, which you treasure. In turn, you’d love to give the same type of keepsake to your guests. You’ll probably naturally gravitate toward the kinds of favors that guests can use indefinitely — picture frames to hold photos of the event or family members, personalized champagne flutes, clever miniatures that remind everyone of the destination wedding you held. When you ask other brides what favors to give, what you really mean is, “what type of keepsake favor would you find most meaningful?”

The Inevitable But Not Very Helpful Response

Here’s what inevitably happens.

Bride A, an older, non-traditional bride, responds: “Well, I personally find picture frames boring, but I gave out sushi candle favors at my small, Asian-themed reception and everyone adored them.”

Bride B, a young, traditional bride, responds: “I didn’t think that everyone would like picture frames, but everyone likes chocolate, so I handed out truffles in an elaborate ribboned box.”

Bride C, who’s a little tired of wedding planning, responds, “I don’t really care about favors, and I threw away every favor I ever got. Skip ‘em; nobody likes them.”

Bride D, who may be a social activist or may have lost someone recently, says: “I have several diabetic relatives who couldn’t enjoy candy, and I wanted to do something meaningful, so instead of favors I donated to my favorite cause.”

All these responses are valid and thoughtful. Yet none of them are helpful to the keepsake bride, who will find the most personal satisfaction in handing out something as lovely as the favors she herself has received and saved over the years.

The moral of the story? Stop asking other people what to get, and start thinking about you. What kind of bride are you? Fairytale and traditional? Sleek and contemporary? Quixotic and independent?

If you have any doubts at all on that score — and believe it or not, it’s easy to have them — go and hie yourself hither to one of the Web’s many “What Kind of Bride Are You?” quizzes. As silly as they seem, they’re actually incredibly useful if you’re still in the process of figuring it out.

Once you have your style nailed down, you’re closer to identifying what favors will truly satisfy you, which is the point. Taking a CNN poll of friends, relatives and strangers is a great way to stay in office, but it’s not a great way to choose your favors.

“Know thyself,” said the oracle at Delphi. It’s been golden advice ever since — especially for brides.

The History of Engagement Rings and Wedding Bands

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

These days, many people take wedding bands and engagement rings for granted, and although they give these beautiful items of jewellery with integrity and love, they are often given with no real knowledge of the meaning behind them.

Both wedding bands and engagement rings are very special items of jewellery; in fact, they are more than just jewellery – they are the symbols of many emotions and promises such as:

  • Love
  • Commitment
  • Fidelity
  • Eternity
  • Honour

But where – and why – did these popular and sentimental pieces of jewellery stem from?

The History Of Wedding Bands

These items of jewellery have a history that spans many centuries and passes through many countries from all around the planet. Below, you will find a brief history of the wedding and engagement ring, as reported from country to country.

EGYPTIANS

The now-famous wedding band is thought to have originated in Ancient Egypt, where it is said that plant sections were fashioned in to circles to signify never-ending and immortal love. It was thought that the fourth finger (which we now know as the ring finger) contained a special vein that was connected directly to the heart, and therefore this became the official finger for the wedding band.

ROMANS

The Romans also agreed with the Egyptians with regards to the wedding ring finger and its meaning, but rather than offering wedding bands as a symbol of love, they awarded them as a symbol of ownership. Roman men would “claim” their woman with the giving of a ring.

ASIANS / ARABS

Puzzle rings were a complex type of jewellery that were once popular in Asia, and these jewels had the charming knack of being able to fall apart and put back together again – if you knew how to do this, of course. Wealthy Middle Eastern men then began to use these rings as wedding bands for their wives, who were often forced to wear a puzzle ring when their husband was away. The husband would know upon his return whether any of his wives had been disloyal by removing the ring whilst he was away, because the ring was designed to collapse upon removal and could only be put together again if you had the skill and knowledge required.

EUROPEANS

Several centuries ago, the Europeans became rather taken with what we would class as an engagement ring, but was then called a Poesy Ring. This ring was given to a loved one as a form of promise, and signified fidelity and love. The Poesy Ring was offered as a pledge of eternal togetherness, much as today’s engagement rings are offered as a promise of eternal marriage.

AMERICANS

During Colonial times, all items of jewellery in America were prohibited due to their apparent moral worthlessness. Instead, a more practical thimble was given as a token of love and as a pledge of eternal togetherness. However, after they were married, the women tended to remove the bottom of their “engagement thimble” to form a type of ring.

History Of Engagement Rings

The engagement ring of today also has its own varied and interesting history, some of which is explored below. Engagement rings have been known by many different names, have symbolised a variety of different things and have not always been made of precious metals and stunning gems!

GREEKS

The ancient Greeks are thought to have been the forerunners in the rising of the traditional engagement ring. Given as a token of care and affection, the rings used by the Greeks were known as betrothal rings and were given before marriage. However, the giving of these rings was not always a pre-requisite to marriage and was often given in the same way as a friendship ring might be given today.

ROMANS

As seen by their use of the wedding ring, ancient Romans weren’t the most sentimental of people, and the early version of their “engagement ring” were thought to have carved keys on them. It has been debated that this could have been to symbolise the woman’s right to access and own half of everything following marriage. However, the more sentimental like to think that the key may have been a key to her husband’s heart.

ROYALTY AND THE AFFLUENT

Engagement rings as we know them today – stunning gems encased in precious metals – became popular in around the fourteenth or fifteenth century, when the affluent and the royals began to exchange and wear these jewels. However, these items were so expensive that nobody other than the royals and the rich could afford to exchange them. It was to be many centuries before these engagement rings would become more popular or traditional.

Why a ring?

The purpose of engagement rings and wedding bands is to convey deep emotions of eternal love, eternal happiness, eternal commitment, and eternal togetherness. In fact, these rings signify eternity – between the giver and the recipient. A ring, of course, is a complete circle with no break and no end or beginning, which means that it just goes on and on – it is eternal.

And, since folklore has it that the fourth finger of the left hand has a vein leading directly to the heart, it is only natural that both engagement and wedding rings would be worn on this particular finger, which was once reputed to be a direct route to the heart.

Summary

In short, it is clear that the giving of a ring in honour of a union, betrothal, and marriage has been going on since ancient times, and although it may not always have been as glamorous and romantic as it is today, it was still a way of exchanging a contract of betrothal or marriage.

Thankfully, today’s wedding bands and engagement rings are not made of hair, grass, plants or twine as they may have been in ancient times, but of beautiful metals set with stunning gems, such as platinum, titanium, white gold, gold, sapphires, diamonds, rubies and emeralds. These incredible items of jewellery are likely to remain as popular as ever as the centuries go by, and even as the rest of the world advances in to a futuristic and technological age, it’s hard to imagine a day where a beautiful diamond engagement ring doesn’t melt the heart of its recipient.

Mayan 5200-year Great Cycle in Scripture

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

The Mayan Calendar 5200-year Great Cycle is a variation of the Long Count Initial Series. Formerly developed in conjunction with the Dresden Codex, the Long Count begins with the presumed Mayan Creation date, noted as 13.0.0.0.0. The most significant digits on the left are Baktuns (400-years), next are Katuns (20-years), and Tuns (360-days), and Uinals (20-days) and Kins (days). The Long Count measures 13 consecutive 400-year-Baktun-cycles or 5200-Tun-years. Therefore, conjecture rationalizes at least 12 Baktuns and possibly 13 Baktuns have elapsed prior to the onset of the Long Count. The 5200-year Great Cycle, on the other hand, introduces a cyclic calendar system whereby 5200-Tun-years repeat to mirror the 52-year Calendar Round. The secondary age category cumulatively adds to achieve 5200-Tun-years, or as some historians agree, 5200-Haab-solar-years in a Mayan 5200-year Great Cycle. The Great Cycle is generally associated with 5200-Tun-years having 360-days each. Depending on the context used, some opinions favor the 365-day-Haab-solar-year. The special treatment of the Wayeb 5-feast days between the 360-day-Tun-year and the 365-day-Haab-solar-year is usually included for Long Count projections.

The Antediluvian Calendar system applies 13 steps of 400-year-Baktun-cycles to describe the 5200-year Great Cycle from Adam to Enoch. Six 800-year Generation Cycles extend the secondary age category to represent the lives of six Patriarchs. The six secondary ages measure time since fatherhood until the character’s death. Adam, Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel and Jared each increment the secondary age category total by two 400-year-Baktun-cycles each. Extra time beyond the 800-year Generation Cycle expresses in terms of 260-day-Tzolken-sacred-years for the first example, Seth. The secondary age of Adam is the 800-year Generation Cycle in Genesis 5:4. The secondary 807-year age of Seth includes the 800-year Generation Cycle, plus 7-Tzolken-sacred-years (Genesis 5:7).

The secondary age category entails thirteen 400-year-Baktun-cycles in the vernacular of the Mayan Calendar. Each 400-year-Baktun-cycle is the halfway, midpoint position for the entire Patriarch’s 800-year Generation Cycle. The end of Adam’s first 400-year-Baktun-cycle in the secondary age category also identifies the end of 130-years in the primary age category. The end of Adam’s second 400-year-Baktun-cycle completes the first 800-year Generation Cycle in the secondary age category.

Seth’s secondary 807-year age follows the same pattern. The third 400-year-Baktun-cycle in the lineage is also Seth’s first 400-year-Baktun-cycle for the secondary age category. Again, at the halfway point, Seth’s primary 105-year age of solar-side time split ends simultaneously with Seth’s first 400-year-Baktun-cycle. The fourth 400-year-Baktun-cycle adds to the secondary age category for Seth. Seth’s secondary age 800-year Generation Cycle finishes at the end of the fourth 400-year-Baktun-cycle. A final period lasting 7-Tzolken-sacred-years or 1,820-days, adds the last primary age 5-Ethiopic-years according to the 364-day-Ethiopic-year. The familiar 365-day-solar-year adjusts by one day every year to add approximately 7-Tzolken-sacred-years from the last 5-years in Seth’s 105-year primary age.

The Holy Bible commits the bulk of this Holy of Holies to exploring given ages for the Antediluvian Patriarchs from Enos to Enoch. Ages of Adam harvested calendar information from several known sources. The Jewish Calendar, Egyptian Calendar and Sun Kingdoms’ Calendars of the Americas assist to discern fundamental requisites of lunar/solar calendar operations. Enhancing our view of ancient time recording, additional materials gathered from the Book of Jubilees, Dead Sea Scrolls, three Book(s) of Enoch and mythological inferences compile for better awareness about ancient calendar systems. Styles of writing and the consistency of meanings are useful in dating ancient texts. The purpose here is to extract pertinent fragmentary evidence offered by ancient writings to facilitate reconstruction of the oldest Antediluvian Calendar system.

Supplementary literature serves our calendar interests. Original Septuagint texts translate to compose most of the canonical Holy Bible. The Septuagint is aptly noted LXX, for the legendary seventy or so scholars involved. Ptolemy II (285-247 B.C.E.) requested six translators from each of the twelve tribes of Israel to work at the library at Alexandria. They translated the first five books of Moses or the Torah. The Pentateuch means the same name in Greek. Most scholars estimate the latter part of the third century for scripture translations into Greek. We are far more interested in the information disseminated in the text rather than every jot, yod or tittle (Matthew 5:18). In English, this compares to crossing t’s and dotting i’s. We can rest assured diligent care was exercised by Septuagint translators in creating Greek renditions of the Bible. According to the Letter of Aristeas, the Jerusalem high priest Eleazar, was to appoint trained Jewish sages to generate precise translations.

Noteworthy resources embrace various stages of correspondence with several collections attributed to be authentically Septuagint. A survey of the similarities and differences yields more specific calendar information targeted toward resolving the ages listed in chapter 5 of Genesis. Contributing texts present themselves against the background of accepted calendar systems. Several Apocryphal (false writings and not canonical) works also became known between 100 B.C.E. and 300 A.D.

Striking 100-year differences exists between the Antediluvian Septuagint calendar ages and those respective ages in the traditional Bible. A contrasting first 100-years of difference exists between the primary age of Adam, as reputed by the Septuagint and the accepted 130-year age in the later Holy Bible versions. The Septuagint mentions the primary age of Adam to be 230-years at Seth’s birth in Genesis 5:3. The Septuagint’s primary 230-year age of Adam departs from a wider set of l/s calendar terms, which indicate Septuagint translators were working with a discrete 100-years single term. Prominent 100-year differences lead us to distinguish 100-year single terms stood alone in the script.

This illustration suggests that 100-days-and-years are an isolated single term. Associated numerical matching of X-days with X-years bolsters a more comprehensive scheme that situates a difference between the 260-year-sacred-cycle and the 360-year midpoint type of cycle. Mayan calendar terminology substitutes for the equivalent 260-year-Tzolken-sacred-cycle and the 360-year-Tun-cycle. Important considerations that select 100-days-and-years graphically determine the difference between 260-day-Tzolken-years and 360-day-Tun-years to formulate the larger frames of 260-year-Tzolken-sacred-cycles and 360-year-Tun-cycles. A distinct 100-year single term is visible in multiple translated texts.

Emphasis for the primary age measures from the characters’ beginning to the primary age time at fatherhood. In the popular Holy Bible, Seth’s primary 105-year age revises to be 205-years in the Septuagint. Scrutiny of the Holy Bible primary 105-year age of Seth reinforces the notion that the 100-year portion was likely a 100-days-and-years single term and that 5-years shares the very same treatment by referring to a special 5-days-and-years single term. Ending the 360-day-Tun-year with the special 5-day Wayeb period agrees with ending a 360-year-Tun-cycle with an outstanding terminal 5-year Wayab. Seth’s last 5-years in the primary age or 1,820-days, link with 7-Tzolken-sacred-years in the secondary age category (Eqn. 13).

Proper historical credit belongs to the Holy Bible from older versions that translate Torah. Modern English versions of the Holy Bible better preserve original settings cast. The Greek Septuagint did a more accurate job of translating spiritual underpinnings as opposed to precise numbers. Modern word searches and the capabilities of the Internet enable exhaustive searching.

The secondary 800-year Generation Cycle age of Adam, measured from fatherhood until Adam’s death, also mutates regarding 700-years in the Septuagint. The primary and secondary ages of Adam offset by 100-years according to the Septuagint. The identical 100-year deviation between the sacred texts affects the secondary age of later characters in the secondary age category by the same amount. The mainstream of the Septuagint copies the generational flow from the character’s age at fatherhood until the characters death. Mesoamerican l/s calendar ages were ideally fixed for both 130-years as half of the 260-year-Tzolken-sacred-cycle and the 400-year-Baktun-cycle as half of the larger 800-year Generation Cycle.

Original Hebrew texts maintained accuracy in keeping with the Sun Kingdom’s calendars. Specific calendar units of measurement show the principal time reckoning ingredients embedded as bits and pieces. Differences lasting 100-years continue throughout the remaining Septuagint genealogy. Seth, for example, has 205-years in the primary age category at his fatherhood of Enos. The secondary 707-year age for Seth likewise indicates a 100-year shortfall from the Holy Bible account. Both cases for Adam and Seth eventually sum for the total age life spans of 930-years for Adam and 912-years for Seth, respectively.

Septuagint translators had access to Torah scrolls and other manuscripts that modern people may never know. Fire partially destroyed the library at Alexandria when Julius Caesar laid siege to the city in 48 B.C.E. The Septuagint was the first canon in the Greek before the New Testament. Books and parts of books were included in the canon. Greek editions of the Hebrew Bible in many different languages aided the spread of Christianity. Some early churches rejected Apocryphal and related works. Septuagint research through all stages, amplifications and modifications is a separate study. Every language and even dialect has particular meanings and interpretations akin to itself. New translations and revisions are undergoing development to this day.

Stringent rules for recopying Torah scrolls have always been in effect. Asserted in Deuteronomy 4:2 and 31:24-26, divine instructions preserve all scriptures intact. Orders prohibit any added or removed words or meanings. The Levite priesthood held stewardship of the scriptures. The New Testament later affirms the “oracles of God” are committed to the Jewish people (Romans 3:2).

The earliest scriptures designed to protect the sanctity and original meanings inherent to the Hebrew Bible determine the copy practices of the Levite priesthood. The chosen Levites were to make new copies of the Bible as older copies wore out. Meticulous rules were in effect for transcribing text. Every page needs to be an exact duplicate, word for word and letter by letter. Counting numbers of words and/or letters per page permitted comparisons to the original text. Up to three people eventually were required to make a copy. A copyist sat in full Jewish dress, accompanied by at least two others tasked with checking the manuscript for errors. Safeguarding the Sacred Text enabled the acclaimed “fence to the scriptures.” Words and letters remained locked into position. A single mistake caused the entire work’s destruction and the whole process started over.

The Temple Scriptures rested inside the Ark of the Covenant of the Holy of Holies. The increasing Jewish population used the same methods for worship and observance wherever they settled. Levite scribes continued to painstakingly duplicate and distribute copies. The Masoretic text of the 9th century C.E. seems to be a standard of authenticity for Biblical scholars. Observing technical terms and relevant styles help to date scrolls and other written information. The last Old Testament Prophet and scribe, Ezra is said to have fixed the canon of the Old Testament about 400 B.C.E. Masoretic text also refers to later versions that date between 500 – 1000 C.E. The moral to this condensed story is to realize due precautions have been observed to ensure the highest degree of content and meaning are conveyed by the new copy. The early pathways of the Holy Bible tell the story of Judaism and the calendar practices of ancient civilization.

Examination of the 100-years precludes simple editorial corruption concerning the frequency and deliberate variations of the Antediluvian ages. The 100-day-and-year single term begins to take new meaning by separating two 50-year-Jubilee-cycle components. Periods of 7-weeks having 50-days are celebrated by the Jewish Calendar festivals of Passover and Counting the Omer that leads to Shav’ot. The King James Version (KJV), New International Version (NIV) and many other versions have corrected any Septuagint errors to reflect original Hebrew.

The Hebrew alphabet is a language and numbering system. Translating numbers into Latin, Greek and finally English combines the numerical value and the unit. Two passes of the 50-days-and-years single term, rather than 100-years, substantially alters our interpretation of the Antediluvian ages. Original Hebrew documents such as the Book of Jubilees and the three Book(s) of Enoch counted the number of repetitions of time cycles or addressed specific days and months during the year. Counting Jubilees as either 49-years or 50-years has been a point of controversy in scholarly circles. Seven-day weeks and 7-year-Sabbath-cycles involve the lunar-side of l/s calendars. Many works mention a decree proclaiming heavenly tablets held written calendar information.

The Book of Jubilees or the Book of Divisions, is another sacred historical text earlier introduced in Ages of Adam. Most likely revised in the 2nd century B.C.E., the Book of Jubilees is a historical account from Creation to Moses. The narrative divides Jubilee periods into 49-years in a familiar story comparable to Genesis. The only complete version of the Book of Jubilees is in Ethiopic. Large sections survive in Latin and Greek.

Are you a pastor, educator or a student of the Holy Bible? Timeemits.com seeks anointed people to review and contribute to the Ages of Adam ministry. Ancient lunar/solar calendars like the Jewish and Mayan calendars provide the background to understanding early time. Ancient calendars of the Holy Bible use differences between the moon and sun, numerical matching and a 364-day calendar year to describe X-number of days that match with X-number of years. Scientology is Losing Ground

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

There are other religions out there. Thetans beware! You cannot remove them by imagining them gone, but this guy is onto something!

Note that the “church” of scientology is more than a little upset with this. “–a situation Kurz (a scientology PR-person) called outrageous.” The fictionology movement is a registered church. The courts have ruled that scientology is not a church despite their claims that they are.

The fictionology church recognizes the Thetans and the Theet O Meter and Theet O Vac. Can you imagine what this is going to do to the scientologists?

The word is that they are hiring copywriters and lawyers. They will do as always and go on the offensive. Sue, lie, and threaten, anything to get rid of this new and very real threat. We will be seeing a lot more of Tom and the other actors telling us why this new church should be ignored.
Maybe is was started by a psychiatrist, what do you think? The publicity machine is rolling!

We will be able to watch as the “church” of Scientology fights for its life. There can be no competition. Every dollar given to another church is considered to be stolen from them.

You can still get your Theet O Meter plans for any donation, large or small. Once you have assembled your Meter (scientology calls it a E-Meter) you will be able to use it to discover if you or your friends and family need the Theet O Vac.

The Theet O Vac was invented in Canada by Del Germyn. I assembled the first one in my garage and tested it on my Cat. (Cats are the only animal that Thetans can live on.) Once the cat was “clear” a UFO appeared and the people in it told me that the simple to make and use machine was not to be given to humanity.

They told me that I had to set a fund up and ask for donations. Once the donation level reaches a pre determined level (set by the Otila, that’s the name of the guys from the UFO, from the planet Diegg V in the Nusiri-Deci system) the plans can be released for the entire human race. I have followed their orders and set it up. Please help. I want to get the plans out by August 2006.

In the meantime you can build your Theet O Meter once you get your plans. They are also available by donation, give what you can afford no one will be turned away.

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

aPriori’s patent-protected technology combines product design information, production facility capabilities, and cost structure, and customer-specific cost accounting methodology to produce accurate real-time, predictive cost information.

According to Frank Azzolino, President and CEO of aPriori, “Tangible competitive advantages are derived from thoroughly understanding your company’s business costs as well the competitor’s products and costs. Understanding function cost trade-offs early in the product development life cycle combined with visibility and ability to affect product cost through manufacturing and delivery drive customer satisfaction and profit opportunities.” Azzilino argues, “A 1% decrease in COGS (Cost-of-Goods Sold) can equate to 16 – 30% increase in net income in many discrete manufacturing companies.”

Based in Concord, MA, aPriori (www.apriori.com) is the technology leader providing innovative cost management solutions to the discrete manufacturing industry. aPriori’s Cost Management Software Platform enables manufacturers to better understand product cost decisions early and throughout the product lifecycle. aPriori’s Cost Management Platform empowers manufacturers to lower cost-of-goods sold (COGS), provides real-time visibility to “cost-critical” decision information, and builds critical cost knowledge to go on the business “offensive.” aPriori’s patent-protected cost management platform allows companies to assess, control, and reduce cost of goods sold by whole percentages. The aPriori Platform truly enables “Cost Knowledge Before it Matters.”

Forget the ad networks, AdSense just makes sense.

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Q: Of the billions of sites on the web, what is the one thing just about every site has in common?

A: Almost every one is trying to make an extra buck off of advertising in some fashion.

I’m ashamed to admit it, but many years ago when affiliate programs seemed innovative, I too tried to cash in by linking to Amazon.com books and music. Did that actually work for anyone? Chances are most will say no. Didn’t work for me either. Not only did I not make an extra buck, I didn’t even make an extra penny. In fact, even my site mrcgiguy.com (shameless plug), which receives around 500 unique visitors a day does not produce particularly good results from affiliate programs. The bottom line is, most affiliate programs won’t work for most web sites. Vague, I know. But from my experience, unless your audience is very general, you’ll need to find affiliate programs that are very specific to your niche in order to produce even the slightest result. Though, these days, even well targeted affiliate programs don’t seem to produce much.

Like myself, most modern day web developers have opted not to join affiliate programs and have instead turned to ad networks such as FastClick, TribalFusion, Burst, etc. I joined FastClick since it was said to have the highest CPM rates. And for a long while, I was pretty happy with the results. I was able to make a breath-taking 50 cents a day. Yes, I was happy with that. I wasn’t expecting millions…reality sank in long ago…somewhere between the days of being an “Amazon affiliate” and having my job dissolved after the dot.com crash. So, 50 cents a day, or an approximate $15.00 a month was great. Every bit helps when you’re self employed.

Now let me get to the point. Forget about affiliate programs! Forget about the ad networks (or at least reduce them to being a secondary form of ad revenue)! Google’s AdSense is where it’s at! What was once offered only to the largest of the web, is now available to those of us running smaller niche sites. And how could there be any form of advertising cooler than one that uses your own content to determine which ads to display? I mean, this is what we’ve all been waiting for. This is the answer. Highly targeted ads, non-intrusive, routinely shuffled to maintain freshness, and they pay well. And when I say pay well, I mean, the potential exists to make in one day what I had previously been making in an entire month via FastClick. While, I’m not allowed to discuss any particular figures (part of the agreement in using AdSense), I will say that it’s not even been a month now, and I’ve already made more from AdSense then I made in the entire duration of running ads for FastClick. Needless to say, I’ve waived bye bye to ad networks and affiliate programs.

Don’t get me wrong, AdSense is not perfect. There are some things that could definitely be done to improve the system. One of the biggest gripes I have, and I’ve noticed
others with the same opinion, is the overall lack of tracking. It sure would be great to know which ads are being clicked and how much those ads are producing. But at the same
time, I can understand why that information may be counter-productive for Google. The lack of control over the border color and link color is a bit undesirable too. All other factors aside, the purpose of the ads is to make some extra money. On this point, Google’s AdSense are definitely successful and in my humble opinion should immediately replace any current 468×60 or skyscraper ads you are running via ad networks or affiliate programs.

The future for affiliate programs and ad networks has become very bleak. It’s going to be very interesting to see how AdSense matures, as the initial product is already undeniably far better than said competition.
