Wild Animal Intelligence is Often Hiding From View

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

It is always difficult to capture wild animal intelligence on film or in actual observation, but it is not impossible nor is it to be consider non-existent. Many times wild animals are caught and nurtured back to health when injured by humans and then set back free, during the minor periods of captivity they are taught new skills. Yet so often once back in the wild they do not teach their local grouping the skill or even their offspring. It does happen and has been documented, but still it is rare.

Much therefore is often hidden from view. And my point being that we do not see this in animals as it is hidden from view as well; Never the less, a study of them up close in the wild is of value. And if an animal is taught a skill by lets say a higher order mammal or being and they have little need for it having evolutionarily already solved that problem in their current living environment or habitat they will lose it if they do not use it and fail to teach it to their offspring as it is not needed.

But if the animal is creative it will take that skill and modify it for some other purpose and that is the point at which you could really say that that Wild Animal Intelligence is more than we think, as they will use the new skill if needed and it comes in handy for a particular purpose and will not use the new learned skill if it is not. And wouldn’t that be the smartest thing to do? Interesting indeed, now let’s take a potential scenario of a new learned skill of a wild animal in captivity.

For instance lets say you teach a Chimpanzee how to mow the lawn, well pretty cool and the Chimpanzee is intrigued by this and gets a kick out of it really, thinking it is funny and laughing at the process, while he or she gets a free banana. When you put them back into the wild let’s say, well there are no CCRs or neighbors telling them to cut the grass.

But perhaps they find a sharp object and think well, there are snakes down there and if we cut the grass back we can see them if they try to sneak up on us. So they cut the grass back. Now to some this may seem like a so what? Yet, in reality it shows quite a bit of planning and adaptation and this is a skill that would be passed on and not the skill of the operation of a modern day lawn mower or push mower, as there are no gasoline stations they can use, no electrical plug ins, no lawnmowers either. So in that regard although perhaps un-noteworthy to some, it is a sign of higher level thought, strategizing and planning, reasoning and creativity to problem solve. Interesting indeed, so consider this in 2006.

Alternatives to Tape Backup

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

You may ask, isn’t tape an anachronism in the age of optical disks, removable hard drives and a plethora of whiz-bang, random-access storage media? In many ways it is, but because of the nature of backup it doesn’t really matter that tape is slow and sequential-access. Remember, tape is cheap. Businesses use tape because they find it to be a cost-effective backup solution.

However, if you have any problems with tape backup, you’ll probably be interested to know that there are several alternatives to tape.

Backup to NAS devices

NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices are attached directly to your network and can act as a backup store. Obviously, it’s very convenient to backup files to NAS, as there are no disks or tapes to insert and remove. There are many NAS devices specially designed for small businesses. NAS is an excellent choice for network backup.

Backup to REV drive

In April 2004, Iomega released the REV drive – a new storage device that has greater capacity than tape and is 5 to 8 times faster. Key features are:

* Backup to REV drive is much faster than tape backup.
* REV drive units are more durable than tape.
* While tape requires regular cleaning, no cleaning is required for REV drive units.
* Backup to REV drive may in fact prove more cost-effective for your business than tape, depending on your backup scheme and other factors.

Otherwise, REV backup is very similar to tape backup in principle.

Final notes

Several reliable backup software solutions exist. Choosing one is simply a case of deciding which is most suitable for your business. As always, invest in quality backup software. Rather than purchasing specialist REV backup software and NAS backup software, your choice in software should allow backup to numerous devices. You will then be able to change your backup hardware in the future without buying new software.

Small Business Marketing: Are You Using a Net or a Spear

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

When I was back in college, over a decade ago, I decided that when I was done I would run off to Alaska and work in the fishing industry. The lure of hard menial labor and the outdoorsman’s life seemed so tantalizing to me after having toiled away in academia, not just for the past four years, but for most of my life.

I learned as much as I could about the fishing industry: working on boats, at the docks and in canneries. I learned that one of the popular techniques used by commercial fishing companies is to cast huge nets between ships miles
apart and drag them through the sea capturing anything unfortunate enough to get snarled. While this technique netted prolific amounts of fish, the vast majority of the catchcould not be sold at the market.

What a waste! Not only do these companies unnecessarily deplete a precious natural resource they also waste their valuable time and energy setting and hauling in nets and then sorting through their catch to identify and pluck marketable fish from the masses.

While large fishing companies can afford to expend their resources in such a manner, as a small business owner, you would be ill advised to follow such a path when fishing for new clients. Small business marketing tactics must be much more precise and efficient to be viable.

To continue our fishing example, consider a tribesman from a pacific island. Instead of employing large nets a tribal fisherman will stand and wait, knee deep in water known to be plentiful with the type of fish he seeks with only a
spear in hand. When a fish swims by he lunges with his spear and voila! Dinner is served, or at least caught. The tribesman’s method is highly efficient and effective.

The methods you employ when marketing your small business or professional service firm should minimize waste and maximize sales.

Are you using a marketing net or a marketing spear to find new customers?

Size Matters
A marketing net can take many forms. One of the most common forms of marketing with a net is investing in the belief that the larger the group you market to the better the chance of developing new business. This type of thinking
could not be farther removed from reality. You can much more effectively generate quality leads and sales by focusing your marketing efforts on a smaller yet highly specific audience.

If you’ve ever placed a display ad in your local newspaper, paid for banner advertising on a popular web site or paid for a radio or TV commercial only to be disappointed by a meager response there is good reason dissatisfaction.

While there were likely a few potential clients who saw or heard your ad the vast majority of those you reached simply had no need for your products or services. What’s more, those who might indeed have a need for your product or service were likely not actively seeking what you sell at the moment they saw your ad.

You can improve the response to your advertising by marketing to a smaller but more focused audience. Your ad will not only appear in front of those who have a need for what you sell, it will be seen by more people who are
actively seeking what you provide.

Take some time to identify periodicals and other ad vehicles that serve your market and fit your budget and then place your ads in front of a smaller but more specialized audience. You will sell more and get more for your advertising dollar.
It’s amazing what a spear can do.

Sharpness Matters Too
Even if you trade in your marketing net for a spear (focus your market) your marketing results may still be disappointing if your spear is dull – you may squarely hit a fish with the tip of your spear but if it is not sharp the fish may squirm away.

You can perpetually keep your spear sharp with an outstanding marketing message. Your marketing message should speak directly to your buyers and clearly communicate why they should buy from you. If it does not your future
customers won’t ever take notice of you, even if you are the ideal solution for their needs.

Many small business owners use a poor and ineffective marketing message because they do not fully appreciate the value of a good one. A strong marketing message will be noticed by those most likely to become your clients and will work to get your prospects to take the action you want them to take: visit your store or web site, contact you for more information and ultimately, buy from you.

Take some time to examine your marketing message. If you get the sense that it isn’t very focused, it probably isn’t. What words and phrases can you use to sharpen it up?

Move Your Marketing Forward
Get rid of your net and sharpen you spear. Even if you hate to fish or have never gone fishing, you’ll find yourself looking forward to every opportunity to wade into knee deep water.

The Magnitude for Buying Public Liability Insurance

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Public liability insurance is essential because all companies are at jeopardy to some level. If nothing very bad has ever happened to your organisations buildings, does not mean that it will not sometime in near the future. If a group of people are harmed or their resources stolen, it’s your contractual responsibility to properly repay them. This expense can easily be really high, depending on the exact case.

However, you do have a means to look after yourself for this eventuality. Acquiring public liability cover permits you to breathe noticeably easier. Even if a particular claim is dear, the insurance firm will be available to supply you with a security net. It is their contractual duty to keep you covered from claims & legal bills brought against you. This leaves you available to focus on actually doing business, instead of worrying about what may possibly happen. The following are good illustrations of times when public liability insurance could come in handy.

Proprietors of plumbing companies as a rule get the job concluded fast and right. However, Every so often something may perhaps go wrong. If you accidentally break a client’s water pipes whilst on the job, affecting belongings for example PCs & flooring, public liability cover will be there to pick up the expenditure.

An additional example is that of an advertising company. If a client were to twist an ankle in your company even if it is not your fault, you would be held responsible. Nevertheless, with public liability indemnity you would not have to pay the claim whatsoever.

In a comparable case, injury caused to an onlooker by a worker on a building site is the legal accountability of the corporation’s owner. This kind of claim can turn incredibly expensive indeed, unless you acquire the correct cover. Find the best Professional Indemnity Insurance quotes and keep business costs low.

HURRAY FOR DIGITAL PRINTING!

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Digital printing is one of technology’s greatest inventions. It has lowered down printing cost significantly that more and more people are changing to digital printing. Digital printers have the speed of 125ppm for black printing jobs and 45ppm for full color printing. This capability of digital printing is very much appropriate to printing manuals and more. Aside from that, digital printing is also great in printing small quantities of print projects.

Likewise, digital printing has made the printing process a much easier one since it does not require the used of plates or films. And since it does not use plates and films the run time usually involved in printing is eradicated. The emergence of digital printing has pave way for boundless possibilities that have been impossible in the past. Take for example paperback books which are rather expensive when printed by means of litho printing but with digital printing the same print quality can be achieved at a much affordable price. Digital printing can even go as far as personalizing each printed page through the use of variable digital data within the text. It can also print almost anything starting from small quantities of print projects up to large volume of print jobs.

Digital printing has also the capacity to perfectly print indexes and dividers without constraint to the number of texts and images printed on them. And also, digital printing has made reprinting much easier as well as faster and at a much lower price.

Digital printing is also great for printing laser sharp images, short run books, printing of various documents, color leaflets, brochures, business cards, invitation cards, personalized training manuals, seminar or conference handouts, posters, display materials, newsletters, bulletins, variable documents like mail shots, price list, catalogues, directories and many more. The list is just endless.

For those who are looking for digital printing companies there are many digital printing providers both online and offline. The choice is entirely yours. However, online digital printing providers are much easier and convenient to reach since all you need is to browse in the internet. Aside from that, most online digital printing providers offer online printing quotes to aid you in knowing the cost of your printing projects before you send your print job to them. There are also friendly online customer representatives that are available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week to accommodate all your printing queries. But wait, online digital printing providers also provide free shipping options in which you as the customers have the right to choice where, to whom and when you want your print projects be delivered to you. Isn’t that service deluxe or what?!

3 Simple Steps to Stay Safe from Spyware

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

There are several basic concepts to keep in mind when deciding to stay spyware free for good. This article will outline a spyware checklist for you to keep in mind when getting tough on spyware and taking back control of your computer using two popular free applications, Ad-Aware,and Spybot – S&D. Using these two programs in conjunction will eliminate a vast majority of spyware problems from your computer. For the purposes of this article, “spyware” refers also to adware, malware, and other not-so-nice “features” of today’s computing reality.

These are some tell-tale warning signs that your computer may be suffering from spyware-

* You receive many pop-ups

* Your computer is running slowly

* You may have invasive toolbars hijacking your browser

* Your home page may have been hijacked

Your first step to escaping spyware’s wrath is to download and run Ad-Aware and Spybot – S&D, the two leading spyware fighting tools out there, boasting millions of downloads each. Please remember it’s always safest to backup your system before installing a new program or executing one. After downloading the two programs, be sure to run the update feature to be sure they are current when it comes to detecting the latest threats. Remove the detected spyware using these two programs, then move to step two.

The second step in staying spyware free involves you to be proactive. At this point your computer should be free from spyware. What you want to do now is keep it this way, to do that there are helpful tips to guide you. In Windows 98 you can use msconfig to view the startup programs on your computer. This is helpful because you can control what programs automatically load when you boot your computer. To access this invaluable tool, go to START >> RUN, type MSCONFIG. If you check the startup programs occasionally you may see a new spyware entry that will alert you it’s time to clean out the spyware again.

The third step involves your web browsing habits. It means you must never click on an activex screen that asks you if you want to allow an innocuous looking toolbar, or “surfing aid”be installed. By clicking “allow” you are effectively giving these perfidious spyware authors free reign over your system and personal information. If possible you should surf with the security settings on “maximum” for safest surfing.

In summary, it’s important to avoid spyware for your computer and personal identity health. To do so, use free tools available to you and be mindful of your computer settings and surf the Internet responsibly. Following these easy steps will ensure a safe and spyware free existence for you and your computer!

12 Essential Tips To A Professional Business Website

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Here are 12 Essential Tips to a Professional Business Website:

1. Choose a big enough font size. A size 12 is good for easy readability.

2. Maintain a consistent look on your pages. Use the same fonts, navigation bar, general layout, colour scheme, etc. You want to create a “congruous” experience for your visitor by being consistent.

3. Break the content of your landing webpage into more than one table. Many make the mistake of putting all their content into one table. This may take forever to load.

Try putting just your headlines into a separate table right on the top, with the rest of your content in a second table that follows. So when your visitor arrives on the landing page, the table with the headlines will come on first.

Note that this trick does not reduce the size of your file as a whole or make your entire sales content load faster. It just creates the illusion of this happening. Your visitor can at least take a couple of seconds to read the first table of headlines while the second content-rich table loads. After scanning through the top headlines, the second table is ready for him or her to continue reading.

4. It is preferable to have a white or light coloured background. Black text on such a background stands out better.

5. Have lots of white space on your sales letter. Don’t clutter up your page with too much information and images. You want your pages to go easy on the eyes.

6. Do not have too many unnecessary graphics on your website. This is especially if their file sizes are too big. You don’t want to risk losing a potential but impatient visitor to your website.

7. Don’t “bold” large chunks of your text. Bold and italic should be used for highlighting and for drawing special attention.

8. Do not underline text that does not point to a link. It can be misleading to your visitor who may wonder why the link is broken or not working.

9. Use the standard blue underlined link look. Avoid changing the link colour. Don’t introduce confusion to your online visitors!

10. It is useful to include links back to your home page on all your pages. Your first time visitor may have arrived at one of your sub-pages, other than your home page. Make it easy for them to link back to your all important sales page (home page).

11. Always check to ensure that you have no broken or outdated links. Get your friends to feedback to you when they should discover any one of these and make amendments immediately.

12. Don’t put “under construction” signs on a page. If it’s not finished, do not publicise it or make it accessible.

Blue-Blooded Summers

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Each summer is a time for vampires, at least the dwarf variety known as mosquitoes. Sun worshippers are out in force, some concerned about contracting skin cancer, others blissfully ignoring such fears. Each scantily clad human body presents mosquitoes with an all-you-can-eat buffet beyond their wildest insect equivalent of dreams. One summer, I overheard one of my new nursing students tell a friend that mosquitoes only take red blood, not blue blood. Blue blood? The comments made this scientist pause.

Blue blood? Yes, many people believe we have blue blood in our bodies. However, no known vertebrate, animals with backbones, is known to have such a substance. There is a small group of green-blooded lizards found in New Guinea, the coloration coming from high concentrations of bile pigments. That level of bile in human blood would be extremely toxic, but the lizards thrive. Ongoing research is trying to find out how they survive, and the bile salts may protect the lizards from malaria.

Then there are a few species of Arctic and Antarctic fishes, whose blood is a clear, colorless material. Instead of bile or other pigments, they circulate a complex substance that keeps their blood from freezing in the otherwise deadly cold water.

But that’s it, really. A few clear-blooded fishes and some green-blooded lizards. Other than that, all vertebrates have red blood, and that includes people. Green-blooded Mr. Spock, of course, is both fictional and half alien (which begs a host of genetic problems I shall not dwell on here).

So why has the mistaken belief persisted for so long that we humans have both blue and red blood? The myth began back in the days of landed European aristocracy. In a time when it was seen as a sign of low status to be a laborer, and only people who had to work for a livingtending farms, erecting buildings, making roadsgot significant exposure to the sunlight. Having a tan was a sign of one’s lower societal station. How very different today, where tans are associated with leisure and vacation time in warm climes! As for the blue blood, one need look at the blood vessels as seen in thin, pale areas of a light-skinned person’s body. The vessels do indeed appear blue, and the effect is much more pronounced in those alabaster-skinned damsels of romance novels. Alas, the blue coloring is really the reflected light bouncing off of the vessel walls and skin, not the blood within. But in stratified European society, the lighter one’s complexion, the further removed one was from labor, and hence the “bluer” one’s blood.

If we could actually peer into a human body, we would see only a very subtle difference in blood color dependent upon where the blood was going. Blood that leaves the heart and brings oxygen to the body is bright red and travels in arteries. That blood then picks up carbon dioxide and travels back to the heart through veins. This returning blood is darker, some might say maroon, others brick, but still decidedly red.

To mosquitoes, though, blood by any shade is a meal.
