Use Your Hobby To Launch A Successful Website

Friday, January 16th, 2009

When you study the really successful websites, you will quickly notice that many are based on seemingly strange subjects, many of which may not easily pass for a serious business.

This clearly underlines the fact that when it comes to online enterprises and ecommerce, the possibilities are endless and you can actually succeed at virtually anything. There seems to be just one condition. You need to be passionate about whatever it is your website is about.

Jeff Bezos had a passion for books and that is one of the reasons why he borrowed money from his parents and launched Amazon.com. The rest is history and today Amazon earns Bezos and his associates millions of dollars.

This is precisely the reason why the first place you should look for an idea for your online enterprise and website, is your hobby. What are you passionate about? Or what do you really care about?

Establishing a successful online venture is hard work and it helps a lot if the subject matter that you are dealing with is close to your heart. It helps transform your chores from work to having fun. The facts are that people usually become wildly successful doing things that they enjoy doing. The more fun you have at your business, the higher the chances of success.

Having selected the hobby you want to turn into a business, It will help tremendously if you carefully analyze the potential online demand for the various businesses related to your hobby. This is easily done by studying popular keywords statistics and is a very important thing to do before launching any online business or website.

For example your hobby could be golf. By studying keywords, you may find that Golf stretch exercises are a very popular subject. This would be a pointer that the right business to start would be something to do with golf exercises. You can, for example, sell golf exercise equipment at your website.

This is the way to cash in on your hobby or passion and birth a hugely successful website or online enterprise.

Dead Horse?

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

And you thought only cats have 9 lives. Nai! When you thought you are pretty much dead
(as far as kicking yourself out of the comfort zone), you’ll be surprised you are pretty much alive once you notice, and then acknowledge that being in the comfort zone is, let’s say, comfortable?, but not very profitable! And I am not referring here to profitable in terms of money alone but in terms of reinventing, reviewing, and updating your habits and attitudes on the sales floor.

If you haven’t thought of this, you’d better put on your thinking cap as this can seriously affect your income and your life in general. It is comfortable to lay down around the comfort zone thinking that everything that you have been doing, just the way you have been doing it, is perfectly fine, but it is not. Really.

A salesman recently asked me if I knew what’s the difference between being aggressive and self-assertive. When you think of the word “aggressive” the first thought that comes to mind is forceful or pushy, right? But when we think of the word “self-assertive” there is plenty of room in our minds to deliberate on the meaning of self-assertiveness. First, we could think of it as someone who is direct, to the point, fair, open, positive, straightforward, lucid, honest, resolved, self-confident etc.; for instance, a negotiator is a self-assertive person.

You can practice self-assertiveness with yourself! For example, eating the right foods, in the right order and in the necessary amounts equals satisfaction, self-satisfaction. You do not need to be forceful on yourself to do this. Similarly, you can use a set of unique speaking techniques on the sales floor coupled with the right attitude to deliver customer satisfaction. Every time you approach a potential buyer on the sales floor, imagine you are treating this customer to dinner and see yourself with your customer having a succulent dinner, a mouth watering dessert and that you and your customer are going to leave completely satisfied and happy. (You with your sale and your customer with his/her purchase.)

A dead horse is only dead until you’ve realized it is not really dead. :)

Should Online Article Submission Websites Train Writers?

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

There are many online article submission websites on the Internet and writers of all sorts post their writings. Some of the articles are great and some lacking in substance, punctuation or spelling and sometimes lacking in all those. But that does not mean the writer is not capable of writing a great article almost every time. You see you can train new writers or writers coming from the print world to be better writers online.

How so you ask? Well, I am not sure I should be making this comment because I typically learn new skills very easily, so perhaps not the best example. This is not spoken with arrogance rather an observation of my many different hobbies and such; indeed, it is also probably from trying so many new things and well, just believing I can do better I suppose. Perhaps you find yourself with a similar displacement or perhaps things do not come as easy to you, but once you learn them you become more than proficient in that new skill?

Most us whether we have even considered it or not, learn through our trial and errors, failures and success; we seem to make it more often than not. If you look back at your life and evaluate you will see this is true. You know speaking of writing skills; until now, I have not considered myself a writer and I admit I am still learning. Writing has been one of the hardest skills I have attempted and I believe I have quite a ways to go. I certainly could have used a Boot Camp getting started. I have written 2882 articles not including this one and it has been a lot of work indeed. Now I know if I can do this then anyone can. You know don’t tell anyone this secret but I got a “D+” in journalism, the only “D” I ever got in junior high school.

What I am saying is you can become a good writer if you want to and perhaps a little training, advice from a mentor accomplished writer, some online seminars or a couple of eBooks from online article writers, well maybe that might be your ticket to success in online article writing. There is only one Online Article Submission Site which offers assistance and referrals to article writing training guides, seminars and eBooks using such notables as www.WordFeeder.com , The Article Guy and The Knight in Shining Armor Chris of EzineArticles.com . You should tap into these valuable resources and make yourself the writer you have always wanted to be. You will be glad you did.

How not to become the victim of plagiarism

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

The idea is the most valuable intellectual property. And the interesting idea requires quality protection from the plagiarism. Before we start discussing why it is not worth plagiarizing, let’s clear up what we mean by plagiarism. The word Plagiarism originated from the Latin word Plagio which means steal. The encyclopedias define plagiarism as “misappropriation of someone else’s works: publishing someone else’s works without indicating the source or a usage of the work without the author’s permission”. If the source is not indicated that is plagiarism.

The objects of plagiarism can be literature works, movies, translations as well as term papers essay writings, etc. The law suggests severe penalties for plagiarists. But despite it the unpleasant phenomenon is still flourishing in our society. The present article warns you how not to become the victim of plagiarism. The problem of the net plagiarism is very urgent nowadays. Any student searching an essay or term paper on-line can fall into this trap. Of course you can find a ready made research paper you need. But here you encounter RISK 1. No one can guarantee you that this paper is used for the first time. Moreover, it could be downloaded by the student from your college and submitted to the same tutor. RISK 2: Now all the tutors are aware of the existence of such free on -line collections. Your tutor could have seen this work on the net. In this case he would have the right to demand your rewriting the paper. Risk 3: Now many universities have acquired the special anti – plagiarism software for detecting the plagiarised works.

Such systems compare the text of your term paper research with the Internet resources base, with other students’ works and also printed issues and italicize the places with the repetition of the texts from other sources. Then it counts up the percentage of such duplications in the text. Risk 4. Downloading a paper from one of the on-line writing services is also a guaranteed way to get a plagiarized writing. Such services offer the students’ works that had already been submitted. So, if you finally have made up your mind to download a ready work, at least paraphrase it, add some chapters and change their order. If you have no time to reconstruct the completed version, the best way out for you is to order a unique writing from a professional custom writing service. This way you will get 100% original paper.

Tyler Benson is a senior writer of www.BestEssays.com. He has 17 years of experience as the professor at several universities. Tyler Benson has been providing competent assistance to students in composing their as term papers essay writings, during all his remarkable teaching experience. Currently he is working on creating his term paper research guide for university students.

Bound To Your Old Expensive Web Host by Fear?

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

You’re not alone! Many people are bound to the old web host they’ve used for years because they’re afraid of the hassle of switching. Customers will pay rates three or four or even ten times greater than what they have to, just because they’re terrified that switching will be too complicated or that they’ll end up losing their site altogether.

New customers just coming online and setting up sites for the first time may automatically assume that expensive prices and brand names, such as Yahoo or MSN or MasterCard automatically mean better service.

Think again!

While you should never base your hosting choice on price alone, you should certainly make your return on investment a priority. You can easily find plenty of space for your site with all of the features you need (and many you don’t) for less than $10 per month – with discounts for paying quarterly or yearly.

So what should you look for when choosing a hosting company?

SPACE: Most websites use less than 100 megs of space. Unless you’re planning to build a large community or upload entire albums of photos, 50 – 100 megs is probably plenty. Start there – you should be able to upgrade at no additional charge should you need more.

EMAILS: Your new host should offer Pop3 emails. If you’re running a home based business, you want at least 10 – more if you have staff under you or family and friends who would love to use your email address and effectively advertise for you every time they send out an email. Your new host should also offer web-based emails, so that you can check your emails when away from your home.

SUPPORT: Can your new host answer your questions within 24 hours? If not, look elsewhere. Your new host should offer some sort of live chat capability during regular business hours as well, and a 24-hour a day help desk where you can email in questions. If you don’t have a contact email and some way to reach someone during business hours – look elsewhere. Email their support or use their chat live capability before agreeing to their service – you want to see if you’ll be treated rudely or gently. These are the people you’ll be dealing with if you have snags – you don’t want the support to make life MORE frustrating!

USER FRIENDLY RATING: What kind of control panel do they offer? Do they offer a demo? What options do you have on the panel? Do you have free 24-hour FTP access so that you can make those 4 am site edits? What about a site builder, bulletin boards, or chat rooms – how easy will it be for you to interact with your customer using your new host’s services? Will you have access to popular features such as PHP, CGI, ASP, Java scripts, Perl scripting – can your new host handle it if your web page incorporates these things?

Now that you’ve decided to make the change and you’ve found the host you love, HOW do you go about it?

First, make sure that all of the files that have created your current site are on your computer so that they can be moved. If you created your own pages using something like FrontPage or SiteBuilder or Dreamweaver, you have these files. If you used a web based builder, you’ll need to download each and every page of your site along with their dependent files to a folder on your PC.

This probably sounds harder than it is. You can either use an FTP tool to download files or download them using the “File – Save As” method outlined below. Should you choose to FTP your files down to your computer, you’ll need an FTP tool. TUCOWS.com offers a free version at http://www.tucows.com/preview/195136.html

Should you choose the “File – Save As” method, simply follow these steps. First, go to your browser – most people use Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, or Mozilla. Find your toolbar and look for the “File” button – you’ll need this. Now go to the first page in your website. Once it has fully loaded, click on “File” then “Save As” and save the file and all dependent files to a folder on your website. Do this for every page. You’ll then have possession of your website. It’s always a good idea to keep your site backed up to your computer in a separate folder, as well.

Once you have your files, you’ll need to make sure any other files on your web host are backed up. If you use web-based mail, forward your emails to an ‘off-network’ email address or archive your emails to your computer’s hard drive. Once you change hosts, all those emails on their mail server will be deleted. Now, upload all of your new files to your new host’s servers. Your new host should provide you with the FTP info needed to do this and/or live support should walk you through the steps in case you get stuck. The next thing you need to do is create an email account to match each email account from your old web host. If you had three accounts named info, sales, and support, make sure you have matching accounts on the new servers. This way you won’t have bouncing emails later when the switch goes through. Now, change your domain name’s name servers. Your new host should give you the information for this, as well. You will probably have a primary and secondary name server.

If you registered your own domain name, your registrar should have a management area. If you registered your domain name through your current host, make sure that you have access to change these items once you’ve moved. You never want to lose control of your domain name!!

The name server change will take 24 – 48 hours to propagate so that your domain name is pointing to your new servers rather than the old ones. You may wish to initiate the change earlier in the week rather than on a Friday because then you’ll have to deal with a longer waiting period. Allow at least a week before canceling your old host so that you can make sure everything works properly on your new host, that you didn’t forget any email accounts or old files and that your new host is living up to your expectations.

If you want to leave your host before your next billing cycle, be extremely careful. If your cancellation date falls after your normal monthly billing cycle date, you’ll be billed again for that month’s service and most hosts do not give refunds for less than a month of service.

Now that you know what to expect and have a better handle on changing your name servers, check out what the web has to offer – your bottom line will be glad that you did!

The Web is Not Paper

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

The web is a relatively new medium – in fact, it’s often referred to as just that, ‘new media’ – and practical graphic design on the web is still less than ten years old, by all accounts. This fact means that plenty of so-called web designers are really just print graphic designers trying to transfer their old ways onto a compuuter screen. What you have to remember though, is that the web is not paper.

Paper Doesn’t Scroll

If you design a site as if it had to fit entirely onto one sheet of A4, you’re doing your visitors a disservice. Text on the web has a potential infinite amount of space. Why make me press a button to go to your next page? Are you stupid? Are you just trying to increase your pageviews and ad views, or what? Stick to the rule of one page for one article, and you’ll do much better.

Paper Has No Bandwidth Issues

You can cover a sheet of paper in all the pretty pictures and backgrounds you like, and it still doesn’t take any longer to pick it up and read it. That’s just not true on the web. I’m sure you abandoned dial-up years ago, no doubt, but there are still plenty of people out there using the web at those kinds of speeds. It’s downright rude to make them sit and wait while your design loads, when all they wanted to do was read some text.

Columns Work on Paper

One of the biggest issues with print designers find it difficult to get over is the web’s lack of columns. You really, really can’t do columns on the web. You just can’t. It doesn’t work. You have to spend hours writing a set of custom scripts, only to break functions like text selection and browser resizing that your visitors would rather have seen work properly – not to mention that reading left-to-right on a computer screen is unexpected and altogether quite unpleasant. Get over yourself, and leave your columns on the paper, where they belong.

Paper Isn’t Linked

One of the easiest ways to spot a site designed by a print guy is by looking for the links. If there aren’t any, the chances are the designer used to do paper layouts. Even more so if they’ve added notes like ‘go to our downloads page to see…’ – you can link to it, you know! Don’t be afraid to link far more than you’d think is sensible. Linking is what the web is all about.

Paper Will Only Be Seen One Way

Web pages, on the other hand, will be seen in a variety of web browsers, at all sorts of sizes, in lots of different fonts… the list goes on. It’s daft to think that you can control the way your website looks to every visitor: what you’re doing is offering a set of guidelines, for their software to interpret however it wants. If they choose to make all their fonts massive because they have trouble seeing, who are you to set your page to override that? Yet many designers do.

Never forget that your role isn’t to make sure that everyone sees the design exactly as you intended – what you’re trying to do, really, is let as many people as possible see the site, and make it look as close to the intended design as possible, if it doesn’t interfere with their wishes. That’s the difference between a user-hostile website and a user-friendly one. If you’re not a print designer, you’re probably nodding your head – and if you are then, well, I suggest you take some time to think it over. The End of Paper?

Paper and the web aren’t adversaries by any means: the web is highly unlikely to destroy paper layouts as we know them, no matter how many ‘technologists’ might predict it. The important thing, though, is that paper and the web are different, and you need to realise that their differences are something to be celebrated, not worked around. The best layout for the same content will be very different on the web to the way it is on paper – but, in the end, why is that bad?

Heli Boarding Is Novel Way of Enjoying Snowboarding

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Alright are you searching for a novel mode to delight in snowboarding? You are sick of the the routine, the ski lift then ski quickly down the red run to the ski chalet that every one is snowboarding? One needs embark on heli-skiing. One will be able to ski untouched snowboarding slopes which barely any other boarders have an opportunity to ski.

What is heli-boarding? Heli skiing is skiing, however rather than getting a chair lift to go up to the top of the slope, you fly up in chopper. Heliskiing offers unique virgin fields for your skiing enjoyment.

Characteristically heli-boarding sorties call for a modest group of skiers headed by a knowledgeable guide who knows intimately the slope. Snowboarders are ferried to the top of the mountain to be At the top they jump off the helicopter then ski to the bottom of the run. When at the end they’re greeted by the helicopter to complete another descent. They could enjoy a lot of runs during the day. It is a pleasurable and stimulating trip during which you will see view scenes and experience excitements few others can merely aspire to.

Heli-boarding is not without perils. Since you are snowboarding off normal skiing areas there can sometimes be unknown risks. You will likewise encounter a bigger likelihood of avalanche. Fortuitously a lot of these hazards can be cut back when one goes heli boarding with an experienced skiing guide who recognizes the mountain very well.

Screenwriting and Hero’s Journey – SEX

Friday, January 9th, 2009

The Hero’s Journey is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters.

The Hero’s Journey:

• Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

• Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

• Interpreted metaphorically, laterally and symbolically, allows an infinite number of varied stories to be created.

Consider this:

• Titanic (1997) grossed over $600,000,000 – uses the Hero’s Journey as a template.

• Star Wars (1977) grossed over $460,000,000 – uses the Hero’s Journey as a template.

• Shrek 2 (2004) grossed over $436,000,000 – uses the Hero’s Journey as a template.

• ET (1982) grossed over $434,000,000 – uses the Hero’s Journey as a template.

• Spiderman (2002) grossed over $432,000,000 – uses the Hero’s Journey as a template.

• Out of Africa (1985), Terms of Endearment (1983), Dances with Wolves (1990), Gladiator (2000) – All Academy Award Winners Best Film are based on the Hero’s Journey.

• Anti-hero stories (Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990) etc are all based on the Hero’s Journey).

Sex

One critical element of the Hero’s Journey is the Romantic Challenge. More often than not there are certain points in the story where the romantic challenge is conquered:

a) Most usually the romantic challenge is given as a reward after having Seized the Sword [Meeting with the Goddess] and undergone the Rebirth Through Death [Woman as Temptress]. In Dances with Wolves (1990), John Dunbar marries Stands with a Fist after having defeated the Pawnee. In The Matrix (1999), Neo wins over Trinity after he has rescued Morpheus and saved her life (helicopter sequence).

b) On occasion, the romantic challenge is conquered on attainment of the Ultimate Boon. In Raiders of the Lost Ark (1983), Marion attempts to bed Indy once they have secured the Ark.

c) On occasion, the romantic challenge is conquered during the Transformation (Road of Trials). In such situations, the hero often has problems holding onto (him or her). In Lord of War (2005), Yuri tries to prevent Ava discovering that he is an arms dealer.

Surviving In The Web Without Google

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Google is the king of search engines today and it is almost certain that your website will not get decent traffic if it does not appear in the first few pages of Google search results. The converse is also true. If your site is ranked well in google, you will enjoy tremendous amount of free traffic.

The Problem Other than banning sites that uses illegal Search Engine Optimization Techniques, Google also put new websites into hibernation (also known as Google sandbox effect). Famous SEO techniques such as keywords optimization and linking strategies will not work on new domain names, ie new websites will not appear in Google search results for at least a few months. Instead of trying to outsmart the Google sandbox, why not focus your effort in getting leads without using Google Search Results?

As a webmaster and SEO researcher, I have created numerous websites and many of them are affected by the Google sandbox as well. This article outlines the techniques that I found useful in getting hits for my new websites without using Google SERPs.

Forums A good way to start is to post questions or comments in forums. You will want to include your website address in your signature so that people can visit your website after reading your posts. The more busy the forum is, the more your signature will be exposed and the chances of your urls being clicked will also be higher. The catch is that you must be friendly and abide by the forum rules, else your post might be deleted by the moderator.

Write Articles If you do a google search for “Submit Articles”, you will find many websites that are looking for articles to host. Write articles that are related to the keywords of your website and submit to their sites. Make your articles interesting and original. Visit the library, do research….etc. Writing good articles is hardwork but your effort will be well rewarded. Copying other articles wholesale will only get you into trouble. This is the most popular SEO technique now but the problem is many people are spamming links in their articles. My suggestion is that you do not provide any outgoing links in your body but make sure you have 1 clickable url of your website in the author biography section.

Impress Your Visitor During Their First Visit If you can make your website unique so that your first time visitors remember you, they will return to your site again in the future. They might also spread your url around for free. A website can be unique in 2 ways, either the content or design. Always ask yourself what makes your website special? There are millions of websites around, what makes people remember your site?

I personally hate websites that have a 1 column layout and start off with a header in red:

“Let me tell you a secret, I made 50000 thousand dollars this month and I want to share with you the secret….”

Websites like these were long out-dated because there are millions of them appearing everyday in the internet. It only gives people the impression that the author is thirsty for money and nothing else. That is the problem if you advertise too much in your site.

One of the tips in creating effective websites is to make your index page fit within the window with minimal scrolling. Make your menu obvious. People are lazy. Make them click on your links and browse through your site rather than making them scroll. Use images and design elements to break the monotony of your web pages. Many websites are ranked very well in Google but they do not sell. People usually do not stay more than 30 secs after entering the index page.

Submit Your Site For Competition or Reviews If your website is very well designed or has really great content, submit it for reviews. You will get free exposure, recognition and prestige if your site wins the “Site of the Day”, “Best Web Design Award” or something similiar. Putting the award on your site gives your visitor confidence in you and your services.

Remember MSN and Yahoo Many traditional SEO techniques still works for MSN, Yahoo and other search engines. You should not stop optimizing your pages even if Google does not like you. Of all the techniques, I found quality 1 way links to be the most effective. This is not an article about effective linking strategies so I will not go into details. Always think of ways to built up back links. It works for all search engines.

Advertising This is the most expensive option but might also be the most effective in getting hits for your site. Look for sites that are ranked well in Google and provide similiar services as you. Visit their site and see if they provide an advertising section. If you can, advertise on their index page but be prepare to pay a few hundred dollars per month at least.

Another proven advertising technique is google adwords. Sign up for an adwords account at adwords.google.com. Your advertisement will appear in many websites across the google network, giving you great exposure immediately. The bad news is that you might need to pay alot every month.

Blogging I am putting this option last because it is the hotest topic nowsadays and definitely worth investing. Getting leads from blogs is an effective technique, no doubt about that. By actively posting blogs and participating in conversations, you are exposing your website especially to people who share the same interests or are in the same industry as you, giving you quality leads. However, it is also interesting to note that statistics shows that most blogs just sit there and do nothing. Therefore, marketing your blog becomes another issue to worry about.

Conclusion I have only covered a few important tips here but they are alll valid optimization techniques and will make you visible to Google in time to come while waiting for the Sandbox to disappear. There are of course other ways to get hits without depending on Google. One popular technique is to buy guaranteed hits. Just search for “get hits” and you know what I mean. Sometimes, I think that being too dependent on Google is a bad thing. This gives Google the power to do what they want.
