HSE launches website to promote Management Standards for work-related stress

HSE has shown how serious it considers the problem of work-related stress by launching a new website to educate organisations about the impact of stress and teach them more effective stress management techniques. The website was unveiled at the ‘Health and Wellbeing at Work’ exhibition.

HSE seems rightly concerned about workplace stress, as it has proven to be a major health hazard for employees and affects an organisation by increasing sickness absence and employee turnover. A recent study has revealed that in Great Britain, stress alone caused a loss of over 13 million workdays. Moreover, it has been shown that excessive stress in no way increases an employee’s performance; in fact, the only impact it has on performance is negative. Therefore, effective management of stress makes sense not only from a health point of view but also from a business competitiveness point of view.

Another important problem with work-related stress is that it hardly ever comes to the surface, with most employees preferring to keep the problem to themselves. This is yet another reason for business managers to be more proactive in handling stress, so that most issues can be dealt with before they become major problems.

Head of the HSE Health and Work Division, Peter Brown, appealed to the organisations to make full use of the website, saying that the problem has gained even more significance in the current economic scenario where businesses are looking for ways to manage their costs to stay competitive.
